Hardware installation probs
« on: December 30, 2002, 20:45 »
Hi all,
Please help as the samaritans were engaged when I tried to phone them.

I'm trying to install a PCI Multimedia Device.
The installation wizard detects the new hardware and builds the software for it and asks for drivers

I put in the disc and it detects the driver for it and copies 52% and then asks me to insert win98SE disc

When I do this it continues to install 94% and then disappears leaving a blank space in the screen underneath

It then asks to restar the computer to finish the installation but never installs it.

Any help would be much appreciated as usual........Thank god for PC-Pals

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago with the drivers for the onboard sound on a friends. It couldnt find them on the win 98se cd.
If you explore the cd and see if you can locate the drivers it wants and copy them to a folder on your hard drive then when it asks you to insert the cd,browse to the location and let it take them from there.
I always copy the CAB files onto the hard drive when installing windows so as when a program wants the cd I just tell it to look in that location (it saves all that putting in and taking out of cds).Even using that system it couldnt find them and I had to extract the drivers to a location I could specify.
Hope this helps  :-*

I would definitely recommend what Sandra has just said ... putting the CAB files in a directory on the Hard Drive is very useful, Windows will look there automatically once you've used it and it saves so much hassle.

I often put the driver files in a similar folder on the HD as Sandra suggests. Saves you spending hours trying to find the CD in 6 months time when Windoz decides to spit the drivers out   ;)

Hi Bat, Hi Sandra

Thanks for your advice but I still cannot access the required files (cmaudio.cat).

I couldn't find them on my disc but did locate them on my hard drive in a security file.

I copied them from there to My Documents so i could find them easily and tried to install my hardware device again but it's refusing to copy the file out of My Documents......just does nothing.

Have you tried going into Device Manager and is the hardware identified there ... if it is have you tried updating the driver from that end rather than the installation?

Yes I've tried it through device manager but still to no avail.

Everything is fine until the last bit of the download. The problem would appear to be on my WIN98SE disc not finding the relevent files.

Is there any other way i could find a driver that would run this device????

Do you know what the driver is called? If so then you can try to get it from either the manufacturer's site or off the net somewhere ... if you find out I'll have a look for you

Hi there Bat,

The name for the device given in device manager is:   CM18738/C3DX PCI Audio Device.

Doesn't mean much to me but hopefully that is enough for you to go on. I don't know what other info I can give you!!!!!!

Hi All,
hope all the partying went well.

I downloaded the suggested drivers and still no joy.

Then had a chat with Hookie on messanger and took his advice of starting up in "safe" mode.
Lo and behold my puter found 3 new bits of hardware and installed them all automatically with no discs etc required.

Don't know why it worked but it worked. ???

Thanks to you all for your time and help.
