Topic: CRC Error

hi, i was wondering if you guys could help, i have recently reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled all my software without any problems, all except for nero, whenever i try and install it from cd i get a CRC Error message in Nero.exe and various other files, so i thought that i would counter this by d/loading it from the net and running it that way, however, when i do this i get exactly the same error messages on exactly the same files when i come to install.  Any ideas?  i am running a 80gb maxtor hd, with just over 1 gb of sd ram, lex motherboard, pentium 3 processor, panasonic dvd rw, liteon cdrw and <unknown> dvd rom. :'( :'(

Hi JPY313 and

Have you got AV disabled in bios and your AV program disabled in windows when you try and install Nero  

You havent any other burning software on your PC which may conflict with it have you, there have been a few problems I have heard of if you have Easy CD installed as well

thanks for the quick reply, i have no other burning software installed, and to be honest i wouldnt really have a clue how to find let alone turn off my AV in windows or bios, is it easy to do?

You get into BIOS by hitting DEL repeatedly as its rebooting.
Depending on which bios your pc has the option could be in a different screen, just use the up and down arrow keys and sometimes left and right arrow keys to access the different screens and navigate around inside of them.
Press ESC to go back to the main bios menu at any time so that you can move to the next screen by highlighting which section you want and hitting the ENTER key.

There is a page here showing a typical BIOS screen and the screens that you can access from the main bios screen.

In this example the option to enable or disable the Virus Warning in is the 4th picture down the page, the Advanced Bios Features, yours may be a little different.
Do not change anything else unless you know what you are doing.
Once you have disabled it, if it was enabled, save and exit BIOS, there wil be something on the first bios screen or on the bottom of the screen that you have changed the setting in.
The pc will then boot into windows as normal.

To disable the windows AV, usually just right click on your AV icon in the task bar and select disable, make sure that you are off line at this point.

It should be near the bottom right of your task bar, near the clock.
Failing that you can go into your program list and click on it from there and then turn off Auto Protect

Hover your mouse over each icon, and it should tell you what it is.  Do you know which AV software you use?  We might be able to tell you what to look for.

i have no idea what AV software i use, i havent installed any myself, so im guessing that it is just what ever comes with windows?

There isnt any that comes with windows as yet.
If you havent reinstalled any after you formatted then you wont have any on, not a good practice these days  
If you look at the bottom section of our main page there are links to some free AV and firewall software that you could try.
That doesnt help us with your problem with nero though as its not the AV causing a problem if you havent got one installed

im having a real shocker at work today, and have just realised that you are reffering to anti virus - not audio visual as i was thinking!! :-[ :-[ what a spanner i am, somebody get me a tomy "my first computer" quickly!!,  although the answer remains that i havent put an av (not audio visual!) on yet due to the fact that the one i have is norton, takes ages to instqall and i dont like it, it would have probably have been the last thing on.  however, i cant see where i would have got a virus from, as i tried to install from cd before i hooked up to the net, and hadnt installed anything else beforehand.

Did the download of nero come in ok without any breaks while downloading it

there was no problems at all with the d/load, i even went back and used one of the mirror sites once i realised that i couldnt open it, and there was no problems with that either, the error only occurs during the "extraction" of the files when it autoruns.

Did you put the download onto a cd and run it from there or from the hard drive ?
Maybe its a problem with your cd rom or the cds themselves if you did that ?
Have you tried copying the files from the CD to your hard drive then installing from setup.exe in there ?
That would eliminate a faulty read of the cd as it was installing.
Sometimes they read ok for copying to the hard drive but have a glitch reading and installing from the cd, I have found that to be the case sometimes with modem drivers quite a few times

i havent tried copying from cd to hd, but i will try thst in a couple of mins.  as for the download, i just saved it direct to my desktop and ran it from there rather than burning it to disk then running from there.  could there be a problem with my hardware?

Possibly, but if you ran the download from the hard drive that should have eliminated that possibility  
I'm running out of ideas now, sorry, maybe someone else will have experienced this and will reply later this evening
