ME falling to pieces ??
« on: April 13, 2004, 19:09 »
Hi all, my wonderful OS is misbehaving.
Tonight i got the bsod (not unusual), had to do a hard reboot then scandisk froze. i tried this several times with same result.  did a boot in safe mode and scandisk ran ok but then when i restarted i got as far as the desktop and everything froze (only a few icons had properly loaded).  eventually i booted the pc from a bootdisc and ran scandisk from that.  it found some errant files and then FINALLY the pc loaded.

seems to me that the os is knackered.  is it possible to overwrite ME without losing all my settings. i'm extremely loathe to do a disc format as i've tons of downloaded stuff, OS updates, loads of virus definitions for my nav2001 etc etc.   advice PLEEEEASE   :'(

Dont think so Dave, even if you just reinstall over your original installation you will need to do the updates and reinstall your programs.
Your data that has been saved will not be touched though  :)

Dave, you have just witnessed one of those rare occasions when Sandra was slightly less than correct :o :P

If you try and install ME from the original CD, it will install in Upgrade mode, which basically means that all your programs' settings will be preserved. However this probably means that whatever problem you have will be preserved also :-\

Give it a go. As long as you backup anything important you can't lose :)

I would say Sandra was correct.  I did a re-install of win me and had to re-install every bit of software. It was a pain with Norton as I had to update it all over again as well as everything else.  :P

Did you install it by booting off the CD/boot disk or running setup from Windows Lona?

If you run setup from Windows it definately does an upgrade install  ::)

Hi Daveeb. I've had this problem before and I have had to reinstall ME. If you use c:windows\options\cabs\setup it will do a clean install over ME but all programs/data remain intact. Of course you do have to update ME from MS but everything else is still there and problems seem to be irradicated. Hope this helps

I run it from an HP restore disc, Sean.  :-[

Just an idea, dave, but have you thought of creating another drive on your HD, using Partition Magic or something similar?  You could then save all your downloaded stuff (I presume we are talking about MP3s, videos, etc) on the second drive, so that if you ever have to do a c: drive format in the future they remain untouched.
