I think there's tweaks in BIOS you can do to sort out the booting issue, DJ, but don't ask me how!  It's one of those things I've read about often, but never attempted - like laminate flooring!  ;) ;D

Ahh get stuck in Simon, its easy once you've done it ;)

I found some good advice for tweaking the BIOS, trouble is, the link is on my work PC, and as I'm in London again Mon & Tue, I'll not be in the office until Wed :'(

Hi DJ1UK,

and congrats on configuring dualbootable PC, what is Unix like to work with ? I've often wondered what it was like, many poeple say it is very stable and less prone to virus attack, is this so ? How is it, if you wish to say file swap or work on things with other people using a windows OS PC.

Just shows how clueless I am  ???

Hi All,

Haven't much chance to fully play with my new Mandrake unix stuff but it certainly has a lot more features than standard windows and is much more stable.

The only main problem is that I have become a slave to Microsoft and so most of my work is done in a windows environment.

I know there are programs that are compatible with office programs (for example).

I'll write back when I've more knowledge.  I am a learner.  only used unix at uni to integrate with Oracle databases and CGI scripts - not much more.

But as always I'm learning

Every Days A School Day !!!  ;D

Hi Again,

Sorted the boot menu thingy.  It now defaults to WinXP.

Changes were made in the Control Centre to Boot Options.

Still playing about with Mandrake, but up to now it's looking good.  No crashes of any other problems.  Still gotta sort that modem out though !

Also heard theres programs to run WinXP from within Unix (www.vmware.com).  I'm looking into these at the mo.

I'll be using Mandrake more when i get back to uni - off for xmas at the moment !

I heard that they were expecting power cuts in the whole of the North East from next Saturday until around the 5th of January to allow them to install the extra capacity power lines for when you switch on Bat  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Bat69 thats a good guide - shame i didn't find it before I had installed mine.

Still haven't had much chance to experiance linux yet - but since i'm back at uni tomorrow i'm sure well get some unix type work to do.

Anyhow i still haven't got my modem to work under unix.  I knew this would be a problem and didn't really expect it to work.  But if anyone knows how to get a Conexant-Ambit SoftK56 data fax modem to work under mandrake it'll be a help
