There can be so many causes Jon  :(
When did it start happening, was it after adding any new parts, programs or peripherals ?
Which OS are you using ?
Do you get any error message or does it just freeze on you ?

Hiya Jon,

Whilst this has absolutely nothing to do with your 'Crashing' problem, you might like to remove the forward slash from the URL of your Profile pic if you'd like it to show up here.   ;)

Is the new drive just in as a single master now or have you got a slave attached too ?

You could download the hard drive diagnostics utility from whichever manufacturers site that has made your hard drive and run that to see if theres a fault on the drive  ???

i was in the event viewer and it came up with about 60 errors so i copyed it. i sed...

AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write to an illegal IO port address (0xcf8), which lies in the 0xcf8 - 0xcff protected address range. This could lead to system instability. Please contact your system vendor for technical assistance.

in english anyone. do i need a bios update??

The utility you downloaded to check the drive with will probably need to be extracted and written to a floppy.
The site should have given sonme instructions about it.
Then you boot from the floppy and it will give options for checking the drive  :)

problomo numero uno...no floppy drive :P but this program is called Active Smart [silly name] but whenever sumthing changes it notifys me. since taking off norton 04 it hasnt crashed. ******** :oTOUCH WOOD :o********* but it couldnt have been that. also i copyed tht thing "AMLI: ACPI BIOS is attempting to write...blah.. and windows help came up with this...

"Explanation
The system BIOS attempted to incorrectly access hardware resources concurrently with the operating system. This type of access cannot be synchronized and can cause system instability.

User Action
Contact the system vendor for an updated BIOS and follow the vendor's instructions for installation
 "

 ??? ??? ??? ??? any ideas???????

I wouldn't like to risk it, even if you're able to make your CD-ROM drive bootable.  Even though you might only use a floppy drive once in a blue moon, they're always handy for this kind of stuff.  They're not very expensive, but if you can't afford to buy one, try borrowing one - and make sure you also borrow the proper cable.

Tip #1:  Check that the jumper settings on your HD are correct.

Tip #2:  This might also be an excellent time to replace your MoBo battery if it's more than a year old.

I've only ever done it from a floppy, Jon.  But you could always try it from a bootable CD.  Then, if we don't hear from you, will assume that the update was designed to work from a floppy only.

How do feel about being a pioneer, matey?   :horror:

Alternatively, you could always wait for a reply from someone sensible.   ;)
