Hi esley!

It sounds very much to me like the hard drive isn't being detected by the BIOS :(

According to this HP document you should be able to set the hard drive from the Main menu. It doesn't say how, but I have a feeling that you simply move to that option using the cursor keys and press enter. There should be some further options, possibly one for Auto.

I bow to your superior knowledge Adept but Esley said earlier "in the bios, under the MAIN tab it says primary master--  40982 " Doesnt this mean that the Bios is detecting the drive after all?

I found this site for Phoenix Bios

http://www.phoenix.com/en/support/bios+support/awardbios/bios+faqs.htm#BIOSTOP

Not sure if it will help as it doesnt give any specific settings or displays, but it says how to restore to its default setting which may help:

PhoenixBIOS -- On a computer with a PhoenixBIOS, you can press the F9 key in Setup
to restore the default values specified by the manufacturer.

As you think it is a Maxtor Drive then a diagnostic utility (Powermax.exe) is available for downloading onto a floppy from their site:

http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxtor.cfg/php/enduser/olh_adp.php?p_faqid=590

I hope you get to the bottom of this soon ( I need my sleep  ;) )and apologise for sending you multiple copies of the same message last night as it appears they did go but werent showing as going on my page  ::)

Good luck  :-*

Edited to add: Can someone make the Phoenix link work properly please?
If no one has you will have to copy and paste it all in your address bar  :)
