High CPU Usage
« on: July 15, 2004, 16:50 »
My Internet experience has been a nightmare for the past two weeks because my computer has been running incredibly slow.  After boot up, it behaved normally for an hour or so and then the CPU graph indicated anything between 60 - 100% even when I wasn't using it.  I checked for viruses and trojans yet nothing seemed to be amiss.  Eventually I started shutting down processes and discovered that whatever was causing it was Internet related.  It appears that the culprit is the Official Big Brother website!  It behaves for about an hour or so then grabs all my bandwidth.  The moment I close it down my CPU drops to between 0 and 5% again.  What on earth is going on?   :'(

Possibly some sort of scripting, or a bad cookie, Clive.  Does the site still work of you block cookies from it?  Otherwise, I can only draw a parallel with an old Tommy Cooper joke:

Tommy: Doctor, my arm hurts when I do this (lifts arm).
Doctor: Well, don't do it then!

Hopefully a proper techie might talk more sense!   :P

Big Brother? Is that the tv program or the Government initiative we are talking about? :o

Either way, you've only got yourself to blame Clive ... ;D

Tommy was right - uninstall it ;)

There's nothing to uninstall as it's only a website.   ;D  It doesn't attempt to drop any cookies on me but it tries to get me to download Flash - which I already have.  I allowed it to download Flash again on my first visit but it stopped me accessing the Internet and I had to do a system restore.  Now, every time I want to navigate around the site it still keeps wanting me to download Flash.  The site works very well for me otherwise but it's definitely the cause of my CPU graph going through the roof.

I left my computer on the BB website for a couple of hours (to watch Big Brother on Channel 4  naturally)  ;D and when I returned the CPU was right up at 100%.  But the moment I refreshed the page, it dropped right back down again.  I'm no longer worried about it but I'm just curious to know what's going on.

Well Clive I think your a brave bloke admitting to watching Big Brother. I've always looked on BB as a program about morons, being produced to keep other morons entertained.........I could be wrong of course  ;D :P ;)
