Hi Mark, system restore only restores system files back to the selected date not data stored such as docs etc so your stuff should be ok  :)
Just click on Start/Help and Support and select Restore My Computer to an earlier time and click next and follow the instructions.
You can only select the dates that appear in bold type as those are where the restore points are.
Some dates will give multiple choices if there have been a few different programs installed on that day.
Good luck  :)

Sounds like you have a program which is failing to start properly with Windows.  Have you installed or uninstalled anything recently, just before the problem started?  It might be a question of going into Start > Run > msconfig > Startup Tab, unticking everything, then rebooting, subsequently re-ticking each program one at a time, then rebooting each time, until you find the one causing the trouble.

If it will start up ok in safe mode but not in normal windows then its more than likely a driver issue.
Have you run an AV scan in safe mode ?
If that checks out ok you could try going into safe mode and uninstalling all the drivers and letting windows reinstall them as it reboots.
Failing that it may be that you have to do a repair of the windows installation :doggie:

AV is anti virus Mark.
It may be loading a virus with the drivers and that could be stopping it going into normal windows.
To uninstall drivers, if the scan finds nothing and it still wont run in normal windows, go into Device Manager and right click on the things like sound and display adaptors and such and delete them.
Reboot and it will find new hardware and reinstall them again and hopefully solve your problem  :)
