I dunno if this is the rite place for asking this, but I think it could be considered "upgrading" your PC...

Anyways, I've been thinking about changing to Linux/Unix as my main OS. Anybody have any experience with Linux?
If you do, can you suggest any good "kinds" (OS's?)?  

I've heard that Linux isn't very compatible with a lot of Windows software...does this count for everything? Is it worth changing over or should I just keep Windows...?

I think that most people who run Linux dual boot with a MS OS as well or just have a second pc just for Linux.

I think this is software rather than upgrading so I will move it there

If you want to try an "easy" linux distribution from the many out there i recommend Mandrake Linux http://www.mandrake-linux.com, i have managed to dual boot this with Windows XP as Sandra said - Do you have 2 hard drives? I found it better to run 2 hard drives with a different OS on each...

I don't have two hard drives...yet, at least. When I get my new computer I'll probably get two 40 gig hd's.

So, you can dual boot? How would I go about doing that...?

How much space would I need for Linux? I have an extra 4 gig (I think) hd around.

Just as an experiment as Linux is a small OS you could probably use youre 4 gig drive for it.
You could even partition your existing drive, if its big enough and use that new partition for Linux but I think its beter having a seperate drive.
Dual booting with windows OSs is usually done with the older OS installed first and the newer one installed afterwards.
I am not sure of the best way for Linux but most people seem to install it when they already have a windows OS on initially.
I would be tempted to add your 4 gig drive as a slave to your current drive and install Linux to that drive and see how it goes

lol, yes, that was me. I use two different computers (well, three if u include my laptop). One is our family comp (Win XP) and the others are both Windows ME.

From what I've seen, Windows ME is the best OS so far. 8)
XP is close, but it is still second in my opinion.

If you havent had any luck downloading Mandrake yet i recommend using SmartFTP and not Windows Explorer, its just quicker  

To dual boot, its best to install Windows XP first because you have NO choice to configured its bootloader... When you've done that one, stick in the Mandrake CD1 (or CD2, some drives dont recognise CD for 1 some reason)...

When you get to the configuration stage take a look here: http://www.geocities.com/desktopmandrake/linuxwithxp.htm.. If all goes well you'll be able to dual boot (i recommend the Grub bootloader, ive never had any luck dualbooting with LILO)...
