IE not working
« on: November 17, 2004, 13:27 »
I had to reinstall SP2 and all is well, but if I try and open IE I can not connect to anything. If I fiddle around it quickly crashes. It taken me most of the day to figure out that if I open a folder, any folder, then connect to my home page or other links from the folder, then the connection is fine, but the IE link itself seems to be corrupt. My guess is that it leads to an older version of IE? Any one have an idea on a fix? Tks

It should have automatically updated the link if it installed a newer version I would have thought.
Have you tried deleting the links and then making a new shortcut on your desktop from the start/programs list  ???

even the "Start Programs" link leads to the bad one too. In fact, when I received the email in Outlook that directed me to your reply, that window that opened up did not work either. I had to open a folder and type in the domain name...

I didnt mean the one fixed on the Start Programs menu itself but the one in the actual program list, if you follow my meaning  :)

Well the only thing that I can think of is to go to Add/Remove then I think its in windows components, then click on remove IE, it will probably try to repair it first so let it try that and then remove completely and reinstall if its still not right  :(

Which firewall do you have?  If you are using a third party firewall, you should switch the SP2 firewall off, or they will conflict.  Whichever firewall you are using, it might be worth trying removing IE from its permissions / programs list, then restart IE so the firewall asks for permission again.

Failing that, try another browser, such as Mozilla.   :)

I just have the regular sp2 firewall Simon. I notice it also doesn't affect other 'users', just my normal account.

I'm not too familiar with the Windows SP2 Firewall, and may be barking up the wrong tree entirely, but is it possible to remove an application from the firewall's permissions list, and let it reset the permission?  Other than that, I wouldn't like to guess any further, other than to again suggest trying another browser, which might at least establish whether you can get a connection, not using IE.  Alternatively, the following links may also help, but the second one applies to IE before SP2:-

still no luck. I did the permission thing, etc. It's strange because the web works if I put in an address in a folder, or click on my links in the folder. But click a link in email, or opening a site in a new window, or just clicking the IE link directly and I'm out of luck.

Beyond me, I'm afraid.  Have you checked for spyware?  Maybe something has hijacked your home page, which is triggered by launching IE?  Just guessing really.  Hopefully, one of the more technical folks will be able to help you soon.

No luck with spyware.

I did figure out how to get the error report that normally gets sent to MS. It is a bunch of code that mostly begins with: <MATCHING_FILE NAME=  etc. I'll post it if it is safe to post. I'm not sure; is there is any private in it that I should know about?

Tks

Still no luck with anything. I think possibly the only thing I can do is create another user and start again. Can I copy all my files and settings over to the new user? Anybody have any advice with this?

Tks.

Was there nothing helpful in the links I posted above?  Not even the one on how to re-install IE?   :-\

Just one other thought, have you tried re-installing SP2 again?  Why did you have to re-install it the first time?

I followed the instructions to a T and unfortunately it didn't resolve anything. It would not let me reinstall IE yet now every time I sign on it pops up saying that IE has been removed.

I've already created another user which, of course, works fine. I can find my favorites and copy my desktop over, but I'm more worried about Outlook and having it use the right PST file. I assume I'll have to import my old one?

I'm sure there will be other settings I have to update, like mouse speed... Is there anything else you can think of that I'll need to do? TKS
