Need Help :(
« on: February 10, 2005, 01:54 »
I recently bought Resident Evil 2. When I start the game I get an error : "Error. Open Driver" then the game starts but without sound. I have
Intel Pentium III - 733MHZ
192MB RAM
Windows 98 2nd Edition
Nvidia Geforce MX 440
Creative Vibra 128
Direct X 9.Oc

A few hours ago I formatted my computer and after installing windows, I tried the game again and it worked fine with sound and everything. But after I installed some programs like Windows media player, Video and audio codecs etc. it's started showing me the same error. Other games like Civilization III and Resident Evil 3 are working fine.

Followings are required for this game:

-DirectX 6 or higher
-Indeo video and audio codecs

I have installed Indeo codecs but still can't seem to fix it. Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Hi Khalid and :welcome:

Have you tried rebooting and then seeing if that game will play, before you open any other game or program ?

It seems as if something using the codec it needs and not releasing it for some reason but I havent heard of that before  ???

Will Resident Evil 2 and 3 install on the same pc without conflicting with other  ???

Yes, I have rebooted many times but still nothing. I had installed resident evil 3 before formatting. No other games are installed in my computer now.

I cant find anything specific to try but maybe you could try dropping the hardware acceleration in your audio properties/advanced part and see if that cures the fault.
Maybe try a different compatability mode in case it has a problem with XP  ???

It may need a driver or a patche.

Have you searched for that on the net?

All the drivers are updated. And I found only one patch of Resident Evil 2 and even with that it's not working. I think the problem is related to Indeo audio Codec. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled Indeo codecs but still nothing!

The only thing I can add is to make sure that when you uninstalled the game no stray files were left behind. Sometimes that prevents a new installation from working correctly.

Uninstall the game again, then do a search for stray files. If you find any delete, then re-install.

The game doesn't need installation. You can play it directly from CD. It only gives you the option of copying Data files to your harddisk to reduce loading time.

Sorry to ask a sesible question:

Are you using the original CD's of the game?

If not, have you tried to play with the original ones?
