Looking for a new printer
« on: March 12, 2005, 15:31 »
Called into PC World today to look for a new printer and saw a Lexmark 6250.  It's one of those "all in one" jobs but looks quite smart and the cartridges aren't too expensive either.  I've also found it on Amazon for £128 which is  £21 cheaper.  Does anyone now if these printers pass muster?

Here's a review here Clive..>>> Lexmark 6250

I went for the Canon MP370 a few months ago and the quality of output is astounding  :nerd:

The only bad thing i can say about it is that it takes a few seconds before printing on times and is a bit clunky sounding.

The good thing about Canon and Epson is that you can get good compatibles cheap.
I just got 10 (5 black, 5 colour) for £17 delivered, which is what ebuyer are asking for a single black for the Lexmark   :scoot:

Edit>  I've just noticed you'd need to join to see that review

I have just bought an Epson CX3600, which is an all-in one printer / scanner / copier.  Print and scan quality is excellent, and the cartridges are dirt cheap, especially compared to Lexmark cartridges.  You can get these from Comet for £69.99, which is a steal for what you get.  Highly recommended, Clive.  :thumb:

That was very useful Cammy and it's what PC-Pals is all about!   8)   The review ends with:

With its photo cartridge left in place the Lexmark took nearly five minutes to print our five-page text document, and text wasn't quite solid black. With an optional black ink cartridge fitted, the same test took only 46 seconds - a fast rate, but the outline of black text still wasn't especially sharp.

The Lexmark's scanner took just 13.5 seconds to preview an A4 document, but at 2mins 17secs it was slow to scan it at 600 dots per inch (dpi). The colours of scanned images matched the original documents well, but there was a slight softness to outlines.

Photocopies suffered from a similar softening. In Normal mode, an A4 colour copy took 47secs, and a mono copy just 17.5secs.

The P6250 looks stylish and different, but delivers mediocre print quality and suffers from high running costs.

Won't go for that one then!!

I've found a review of the Canon MP370 http://tinyurl.com/5hx8t and that looks much better, particulary in the light of what you say about cartridge costs.  £167.03 at Amazon with another 5 star review!  8)

I'm only working at half speed today Simon because I have Man-Flu.  I may not make it through the night.  I didn't see your post (or chose to ignore it)   Don't the Epson cartridges have nasty chips in them though?

They do have chips in them, but so do the compatibles.  The ones I use are from www.cartex.co.uk and I've never had any problems with them.

I've bought the one from Comet and it's being delivered on Tuesday.  It really seems a teriffic bargain and they flogged me 1000 sheets of A4 for a further fiver.   However, I declined their cartridges!

Is it the Epson SO20118 Black Compatible Inkjet Cartridge I have to buy Simon?

You have four cartridges in a set, Clive, one black, and one each of magenta, cyan and yellow.  The ones from www.cartex.co.uk are Epson TO44140 (TO441) Black Standard Capacity (17ml) Compatible Inkjet Cartridge, and the accompaning coloured ones.  You can get a multi-pack of all four for £17.99 (+P&P), or if you buy in quantities, it works out even cheaper.  It's better having separate colours, as you don't have to replace the whole cartridge if one colour runs out.

Got it!  The cartridges are an excellent price!  I intend to network both computers together when it arrives so I expect I will need further assistance!

I've always been more than happy with the quality, price and service from Cartex, Terry, so no, I haven't tried elsewhere.  I have to admit, I'm a little wary of cartridges which seem to be very cheap.  The cartridges from Cartex may be a little dearer, but ColorJet are a recognised brand for compatibles.  Incidentally, Blank Disc Shop don't actually list my printer, the CX3600.   :?

PC World charge £26 for my HP cartridges which is why I pay Viking £14 each for them.  Those Cartex people want just £3.99 for the Epsons so it's already a culture shock for me Cammy!   8)
