« on: April 17, 2005, 16:26 »
hello..
i subscribed to pipex 1mb unlimited broadband solo last night and
then it started saying stuff like if your line is not secure enough
or strong enough do you wish for us to downgrade you to 500.. i didnt tick the box..
does that mean if my line isnt strong enough that i wont be able to get broadband??

also i picked 3 free filters.. i am connecting my upstairs pc and my upstairs xbox (next to each other) and mum is having a wireless pci card in her pc downstairs..
i have the little phoneline box thing on the wall in my bedroom and we have 1 downstairs (where the phone is) and theres a split box on that which has the cable leading to my little box upstairs
and one to my mums pc.. do i need a filter for each little box in the wall or do
i just need 1 for every phone we have?? we only have 1 phone and it is downstairs..

could somebody give me some step by step instructions of how to do everything and set it all up please if not its ok.. i just thought id ask
so i can print it out because i wont have the internet as of tuesday..
i subscribed saturday night and they will be sending us a letter in the post
with our account number and password.. what do i do with the password?

p.s i am buying the wireless router and pci card seperately :)

sorry if this post is a bit confusing and jumbled up.. im in a rush
because im about to go out..

thanks in advance PoD

The letter that comes with the filters (and modem?) will explain everything, PoD, although I'm not sure it will cover setting up the router, as obviously that's not part of the package they are sending you.

As for the filters, they say you should have a filter on every phone point in the house, so that if you are online, and someone else uses a phone, it won't affect your (or their) connection.  You definitely need one fitted to every phone point your PC is connected to, directly or indirectly.

Some phone lines are currently only capable of ADSL speeds of up to 512kbps, which it seems yours is at the moment, so it looks like you will have to make do for now, until BT get round to upgrading the line.

The account number and password will probably be the username and password they give you, in order for you to connect to the service, much as you have now with your current dial up, however, these will not be changeable, so make a note of them, or don't lose the letter!

Without the complication of routers, mine was a very simple procedure to set up, and the letter you receive should contain all the information you need, but you'll probably have to ask Sandra about setting up the router.
Many thanks to all our members, who have made PC Pals such an outstanding success!   :thumb:

Actually Simon, I am not sure if the pc needs to be into a filter  :?
I think its just any phone thats plugged into a socket needs to be into a filter as its the ADSL that interferes with the phone, not the phone interfering with the ADSL but it wont hurt to have the modem or router plugged into one too, in fact my router has the small plug for the ADSL side of the filter so needs to be into it or into an adaptor.  :)

Routers are usually very easy to set up PoD, unless like Michelle you use AOL
Normally you dont have anything to install, just connect the phone line and connect the ethernet cable to your main pc and plug into the power.
Give it a few seconds to boot up then enter the IP address of the router into your web browser.
It will probably want the routers username and password entering to allow you to access the router, this should be in the booklet that comes with the router along with which IP address it uses.
Once you have logged in there will be a section for entering your ISP details, you may have to enter 0,38 as the number but most routers already know that and will only ask for your ISPs username and password.
Leave everything else at its default settings, click on submit or save or flash to memory, whichever one your router gives as the save option.
Close the browser and re open it then you should be online  :)
If for some reason you cant connect to IE then switch both your router and PC off and then switch them both back on and it should sort itself out.

I assume the PCI card you are talking about is a Wi Fi one ?
Just fix it in and install the software as normal, access the router through its IP address in your web browser on your main PC.
Go into the WiFi section and initially set it up without any WEP, (encryption).
Once its working on the Wi Fi side you can select the WEP and it will generate a code, set the WEP on the Wi Fi equipped PC to the same code and that should be it  :)
