Hi, when I do the "windowsupdate" thing, it downloads them successfully, but won't install: "The following updates failed to be installed successfully:" followed by the list. Any ideas?

Is your copy of XP a legal one ?
Are you trying to stop it downloading SP2 as last week there was something about XP installing SP2 whether you wanted it or not so maybe they have something that stops updates installing until you have SP2 installed   :?

Yea it came with the PC from PC world. As for SP2, I've had countless problems with that, last time i tried to install it, it wouldn't install. Like now.

Its unusual but maybe your AV is stopping it ?
You could try downloading it with your AV disabled but dont go on any other site or open any e mails while its disabled  :(

Don't have an AV, just a firewall, and I have tried with the firewall off.

Only as far as SP2 is concerned as far as I know, that is or was avaliable on a cd free from microsoft.

Do you get any error messages or does it just say it couldnt install ?

This is a bit lengthy but have a look here at what could be causing it :

How come you arent running any AV, its not a good idea with so many nasty viruses around

Microsoft will also supply you with a CD Rom containing all the XP updates including SP1 and beyond.

If you decide to install an Anti-Virus, try AVG7 - free version available at http://www.grisoft.com.  It was a pain in the ar5e when they first released version 7 - an email checker that ate resources but didn't even work properly being just one of the problems with it - but I tried it on my spare computer the other night and they seem to have mended it.

By the way, the free version of AVG7is well hidden on the company's website.  You'll find it here:

http://www.grisoft.com/doc/40/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

Also, ignore all the rubbish about its limitations, it's fine for home use.
