It may do but as I said its so tied up with matching numbers usually that even if I have tried installing over the top with a legal version over a pirate or vice versa it seems to know and wont allow it  :(

Also I think with Michelles mobo being a relatively new one that even a copy of XP inc SP2 may not have the drivers she needs, although they should have been on the windows update site I would have thought  :(

sometimes you can format in fat32 and after install you can change back to ntfs and it will allow it

You may be right ive seen a dell computwer that a new windows xp with sp2 from the store didnt have the drivers for

A question sandra?

since she has a legal copy of windows could she use a good but non legal copy to install windows and then use her registration numbers

they can be found that do have all the drivers

Quote from: "Sandra"
I dont think so Davy as it would need activating and I dont think that the numbers would match  :?

Are you sure about that, Sandra?  I have previously loaded a 'full' version of XP onto a machine which only had a recovery disc.  I'm pretty certain it's the serial number which counts, and she has that, so she should be able to use any XP CD, providing it's the same version.

i have a combonation of two copies of windows xp on this computer and between the two it gave me all the drivers i needed even though it was dedicated to windows 98

I had to install both in fat 32 to get it to accept them and then i changed to ntfs and it allows me to download from microsoft itself

Maybe that it was because I was trying XP pro on an XP home one ?

I dont think she has a full version though legal or not, yet

Probably.  I think it has to be compatible, i.e., you can't use an XP-SP2 CD on a machine with an older version, if you see what I mean.

I'm sure she soon will have!

I couldn't get my floppys to take that download duh!!!!  I gave up and went house hunting ..... no joy there either!

Will look at it again tomorrow.

No copies of XP at all ..... only this poxy repair thing "spit" gave me, although I may be able to get one.

Do you think that might help then?  hmmmmm

I think, if you can get a full copy of XP (with SP2), and do a complete format and re-install, it may well solve all the problems. Michelle.  The way things are at the moment, you have nothing to lose by trying it.

In case you got the wrong file somehow, (well you are blonde  :P  ), I have zipped it and emailed it to you  :)

Maybe your download was corrupted somehow ?

Okay ..................... do you want the good news or the bad news?

The good news?   Okay..........

We set it all up, just like sandra said, and its been okay ....... tis working and most of the drivers are on.  Two to go, and I've asked mesh what the heck they are. I've also told mesh that I want a refund if it goes TU again. But I think they will just offer to repair it again. Anyway I've restarted loads of times now and boots up lovely (fingers crossed)

The Bad News is ...............

Now I bet you are thinking she must be making this all up

Nooooooo its all true!

There seems to be a problem with .... WMI

I was setting up the network thing and it won't let me into somethings there is a message there saying

windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The windows management instrumentation (WMI) might be corrupted. Correct this by using system restore...blah blah blah.

Sooo now then?  Whats that all about?

I've been searching the web but I've found nothing to help.

Any idea's please guys and gals.

Oh and I already did a restore cos it started acting up, then I realised it was the mouse?!?  Wireless thing. - I plugged in a normal one and it was fine. :-)

Not a solution, sorry!   :(     But probably you've passed by this page to understand the meaning of the WMI

It's too much technical matter which confuses the mind (Especially to a blonde       )

Have I been in your shoes, I would reinstall windows. But certainly Sandra will find a better solution.    :)

Well Michelle, I'll try to translate from French. No doubt, you'll find what's equivalent to it in English:

Go to Control panel, and then to "Adminitration Tools", and take "Services".

You need to see if one of those two is desactivated. You'll need to reactivate it:

1 - Cards of WMI performace on manual.   (Remember!!!   I'm translating it from French)

2 - Extension of the Pilote WMI.    (Maybe in English, instead of "Pilote" you'll find it as "Driver")

I hope that helps.    :)

I cant think why you should need WMI, it seems as if its for remote control/access of another pc rather than just a network, although I am not familiar with it  :(
