icons missing

I replaced my HD by basically doing a disk image. Almost everything worked flawlessly and I've been up and running for a couple of months. But for some reason I lost a lot of icons. For example, all my PDF files have that generic non-associated file icon. They open properly with Acrobat Reader, but there seems to be no way to change to what they should be.

I also have many htm files which are missing icons. Some are correct, some have that same non-associated icon. I am able to change individual icons on these files (not sure why properties give me this option here an not on the PDF files), but it only lets me do individual files,  and not all of them at once.

Many other icons are improper too, including some of my off programs that just have a generic "exe" windows icon.

Any ideas how I can repair all these icons?

I cant think why they have done that but the only way I can think of that may sort them out is if you right click and select Open With then select the correct program or browse to it, then tick the Always Open With This box at the bottom.
That should associate all those types of files with that particular program and show as the correct icon.

That's what is so confusing Sandra. If you look at the properties of the PDF files for example it shows the right program icon, but not when you just look at the file in a folder or on the desktop. I tried changing associations and going back to Acrobat with no luck. They open and work just fine, but the icon doesn't change...

Hi there

Have you tried right clicking on the folder, then properties, then  change icon and browse for the correct icon then say ok.

I have just done it with one of mine and was able to change icon.

Yes thanks Lona, tried and unfortunately it didn't work. For the htm files it works on individual files, but doesn't change them all across the board. And on the PDF files there is no option to change the icons at all...

I dont know if this will work or not but open a folder, go to tools/folder options/view then untick the Hide Extensions To Known File Types box.

Then if you right click on your icon and select Rename you can see if the extension is correct. I just tried with a .txt file and changed it to a .pdf and it came up with the standard acrobat icon, I then changed it back to the .txt again using the same method.

Thats about all I can think of at the moment  :?

Didn't work iether Sandra. However, I did "Detect and Repair" adobe and the pdf files are working. I'm going to try and do the same thing with the office programs as many of them seem to be the ones with problems....
