hi,
Suddenly i`m having trouble accessing secure sites, ie,my paypal acc, ebay acc, ordering tickets etc, gone into the security settings in control panel, seems fine, i`m running xp.
anybody have any ideas ?

Can you tell us which browser you are using (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc), and have you made any adjustments to your firewall recently? The first things to check are security settings in the browser itself, then delete all cache and cookies. That may solve things. Also check your firewall settings to see if it's blocking access to certain sites. We can help you further with this, once we know which browser and firewall you are using.

I`m using I.E. and have just recently got rid of norton (which is uninstalled now) so at present i just have the windows firewall selected, deleted cookies to no avail,

Open the security centre then go to the firewall settings then Advanced click on the settings for your connection and then tick the box for secure webserver (HTTPS) then ok it.
Hopefully that should allow you to connect to the secure sites that you cant connect to at the moment

I assume that you can connect ok if you temporarily disable the firewall ?

Have you tried adding the secure sites to the trusted ones in IE ?

Open Microsoft Internet Explorer.
-Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
-Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
-Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.
-In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the site addresses that are currently being blocked.

Its a bit of a pain if you have a few sites to add but that should allow them.
Its possibly that your security settings are set a little too high

won`t allow with firewall on or off,
tried all that you`ve just told me to do, still no good,

also set security levels to the minimum and still can`t get on a secure site

As someone who will never use XP, I can't really help except to say that there have been several similar problems reported recently and I was wondering if it anything to do with the evil SP2?

Just a thought, in IE, go to Internet Options > Advanced, scroll down to Security and check that SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 are both ticked. Other than that, it may be because you have uninstalled Norton, which can tend to screw things up if not uninstalled correctly. Did you uninstall it with Add / Remove Programs?

yes both are ticked,
you could be right with the norton bit,
even though i uninstalled there is still a norton security icon in add & remove progs that i cant remove, does anybody know how i can remove this, then hopefully i`ll be back on the right tracks.

If you go HERE, it tells you how to manually remove the 2003 version. If you have a different version, a search of the site, or even Google, "uninstall Norton Internet Security yyyy" (yyyy = year) should find you some answers. Norton is notoriously bad tempered at being removed, and often causes problems like this. My guess would be that you uninstalled it while it was still running. Simply disabling Norton from the tray icons doesn't stop it running. You have to go into the Options, tell it not to start with Windows, then reboot, to stop it from initiating.

I had a similar problem and no matter what I did I couldn't get into my bank's secure site.

I could access all other secure sites but not my main bank.

However, after doing a windows update for some reason I could access my bank.

Have you got the recent updates for xp.?
