Won't accept memory
« on: August 21, 2005, 13:21 »
I have just bought a new PC and wanted to upgrade the old one for my lad . SiSoft Sandra said that the motherboard supported 4x1GB RAM .
It currently has 2x256MB and I bought a 1MB stick .
I have tried the new memory in every slot , both with and without the existing memory .
As soon as I turn the computer on there is a long beep which is repeated until I pull the power - it will not switch off on the box .
The screen stays black .
Putting the original memory back in ensures that everything runs as normal .

What is going wrong ?

Unfortunately it sounds like you have bought some memory that is incompatable with your motherboard  :(

This used to be a big problem with SDRAM but DDR is usually more accepting of different makes, I assume that its a DDR motherboard if it will take 4 gig  :?

The only way to make sure that you are getting compatable ram is to buy it from somewhere like http://www.crucial.com/uk/ which guarantees that their ram will work if you use their system for identifying the make and model of motherboard.
Its a little bit dearer than some generic memory that you can buy elsewhere but usually not by too much  :)
