windows xp user accounts

Hi All

Its me again :-)  I like to keep you busy

I want a user account just for games, when I set up a new account, it has everything on it that is on the admin account, I don't really want that.  So can I uninstall things like the modem and firewall etc etc etc on that account and it not affect the other accounts?

And I heard not to use your admin account for general use but to use another one as it is safer incase you get a virus or something then the admin account will still be okay, is this right or did I make it up? LOL

thanking you inadvance for any assistance.
xxxxxxxx

I am not used to multiple accounts Michelle.
Being single and the sole user of my pcs has some advantages I suppose

I cant see why you cant uninstall stuff from a single account, as long as you dont let it remove any shared or common files as that could possibly cause a problem.

As far as being safer in case you get a virus then I dont think so.
It would be a pretty pathetic virus if it didnt infect all your accounts on your OS drive  :(

Thanks for the comments sandra ... yeah, thats what I thought about viruses, i think simon knows about user accounts, maybe he can add more info.

Is he moving is that why he's not been on ?

I'm just a bit worried to uninstall the modem from the other user as it was a bugger to set up the network.

Yes, Simon has moved and is without a phone line until BT sort him out.  He very cleverly sent me an e-mail using his mobile phone to tell me that.  Very impressive!!

I think user accounts are more for files and documents.  As far as I understand, you can't have, for example, User A using Norton Anti Virus, and User B using McAffee.  I could be wrong, but I think most programs like that, installed on an Admin account, are installed globally, unless you have different partitions for each user.  :)

hmmmmm, so ..........
erm.......

I don't want to use the internet on my games user, it'll be pc disk games, so what I need to know is if I can uninstall the modem and other such things on the games user account, that I don't need running there and it still work on the admin account, or ... will I not even be able to uninstall it due to restrictions?

I'd try it but its a bugger to set up the modem again! Oh I said that    :)

Why do you need to uninstall it, Michelle?  Can you not just not use it?  Surely your router allows you to work offline, and you can disable the AV anf Firewall while you're playing games, if you want to, although I have never found the need.  What's your reasoning for wanting a user account purely for games?

On the games I've got it says as you are adding more to it, it can slow down so to prevent this disable things in task bar that are running, so I just thought why don't I just have one user for games with nothing else on it.

To be honest, with the spec of the PC you have, it should play games without any problems, but if you feel the need, it takes two seconds to disable the other programs in the taskbar - probably quicker, in fact, than switching users!
