Autoexec.nt error
« on: September 15, 2005, 19:59 »
Another one for you... My neighbors computer freezes up after starting XP, no matter which user name you sign on with. It all starts OK, but then an error message appears and the thing freezes or shuts down.

Message:
C:\Windows\Sstem32\qckpve.exe

C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt.
The system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and Microsoft Windows application. Choose "Close" to terminate the application.

closing does not work, neither did starting in safe mode. I found something online that says I need to go into DOS and copy a backup autoexec.nt file over the regular one. But first I'm not sure where the files are or how copy them over, and second, I was not able to figure out how to start the computer in DOS mode; I thought this might be part of the error itself.

System restore does not work as the computer doesn't stay on long enough to open it up before it freezes.

Any ideas? Thanks

Download this free program NTFS4dOS from :

http://www.datapol.de/dpe/freeware/

Install on a working pc and let the wizard make a floppy.

Boot the dodgy pc using that floppy, when its booted and asked if you are using for private use,
type YES

Then type the instructions as follows :

At the A: prompt type C: (hit enter)

CD windows\repair  (hit enter)

copy autoexec.nt c:\windows\system32  (hit enter)

That should find the correct file and replace it if it is missing or repair it if its damaged or corrupt in the system 32 folder.

If it ask if you want to overwrite say YES.

I hope that works as Scrumpy Jack has been helping me to work through it and I had it working on a spare pc up to the overwrite part, so it should be ok  :)

I ended up advising my neighbor to reinstall windows over again, which they did, and all has worked out for the best...
