hi guys

tis me again, lol

I've got a pioneer dvd rw dvr-109

Am updating my dvd collection and.......

I've got some cd-rw 700mb hi speed discs but they were too small for some films that I wanted to burn, so I got some dvd+rw sp120min and I thought that would do it, but it doesn't seem to recognise them!?

I think I need cd-rw 800mb but I can't find them, any idea where to get them cheap?

Also what is the dvd+rw for if not for putting films on?

Am new to all this burning stuff.

Oh am using Nero burning rom SE to burn, if that helps.

thanking you in advance for any advice

oh and whats the difference with - and +

Hi, Michelle.

I don't have any experience of problems with DVD drives, so I can't really come up with any concrete suggestions.  However, does the drive not recognise any DVD disks at all, or is it just those with video files on that it doesn't recognise.  (In other words, will it recognise data DVDs?)  Also, have you installed all the software that came with the drive, or did you just let Windows find it and then try to use it with your already installed burning software?  Finally (and I apologise if this sounds obvious and a bit patronising) but have you tried rebooting the computer, as I sometimes have to do that if I have been burning CDs and then change over to DVDs?

I'm sure someone with more ideas will be along soon.

Are you sure that theyre DVD 120 mins and not CD 120 minutes Michelle as I havent heard of any DVDs having a time on them just the size in GBs  :?

You can get 90 and 99 minute cds but I havebt heard of 120 minute cds either  :?

To burn a 90 or a 99 minute cd you need to go into the properties settings of Nero and tell it to "Overburn" to either 90 or 99 minutes as nero wont recognise it if its over the standard 74 or 80 minute cd.

Can you confirm what the discs are that you have and possibly put a link to where you got them from if you got them online or tell us the make and type of disc  :)

This is a pdf that explains a little about the differences in DVD + and -   :)

http://www.medea.co.uk/infiniti/PDF/dvd_difference.pdf

And this is a link for 99 minute cds but they have more or less lost out now that DVDs can store much more :

http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?rb=11727313037&action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=36682

Apparently 4.7 gig DVDs are classed as 120 minute and the smaller 8cms 1.4 gig DVDs are 30 minute.

I had never seen them quoted in minutes before as the time is dependant on which format you are burning in  :?

I have up to 9 hours of video on a 4.7gig DVD in Divx or Xvid format, similarly I have around 2 hours and 30 minutes on a 99 minute CD in the same format  :)

Michelle,  when you are trying to burn film using dvd+rw are you making sure you are letting nero know you're using a dvd to copy and not a cd.

My friend who had similar problem was putting in dvd but not changing burn cd setting in Nero.

Another thing to try is formatting disc first, then try to burn again.  I eventually got Nero to recognise dvd disc.

Sometimes using very cheap DVD+rw discs won't work either.

I hope you're not trying to burn a bin and cue file using dvd as I can never get them to burn onto dvd unless I extract the movie first.

I think that Lona has sorted your problem out Michelle.
It needs a little further explanation though I think  :)

Open Nero Express from the Start/Programs/Nero part.
At the top of the window it will give you more options than you used to get when you just had a CD writer.

If you have a DVD writer and a CD writer you can select Image Recorder (DVD), Image Recorder (CD-R/RW), Drive letter and model of CD drive (CD-R/RW), Drive letter and model of DVD drive (DVD) and Drive letter and model of DVD drive (CD-R/RW).

If you only have a DVD writer then you just get the options of Image Recorder (DVD), Drive letter and model of DVD drive (DVD) and Drive letter and model of DVD drive (CD-R/RW).

To burn a dvd then you need to select Drive letter and model of DVD drive (DVD).
Then you select the type of DVD that you want to burn  :)

While on the subject, does anyone know if Nero will automatically recognise a dual layer DVD +/-RW?

Not sure if the actual hardware supports them yet, but according to CD-RMEDIA.CO.UK, you can also get dual layer '-', although they happen to be out of stock at the moment.
They are a very good, cheap and reliable source for all blank media, and I would highly recommend them, but stick to small quantities per order, to avoid heavy postage costs.

ahhh, right, thanks for all the info, I've not read deeply into it all yet, but the dvd+rw discs are sp120min/4.7gb as you say, they are FUJIFILM

the cd-rws I have are verbatim.

Ah ..... I am changing it over to dvd in nero I think I am doing that bit right BUT they are bin/cue files I am trying to burn, thats all I've tried so far I've had some good results on the cd's but that seems to be my problem.  I'll have to look into how to extract the movie first then.

ooh I saw about that over writing thing but I didn't try it as it said it would affect the quality, I guess I could try that though, it won't hurt to try it.

The dvd writer is working fine in itself it works on all counts.

I just wanted to answer those points and I'll go back and read the other bits now.

Thanks again! xxx

It's the bin and cue problem Michelle as I said in previous post.

You will have to download isobuster or winiso and extract the avi files then burn as normal.

I fought for ages trying to figure out why I couldn't burn a bin and cue on dvd when it burned fine on cd but then I discovered that dvd won't work with bin and cue. :)

It depends on what kind of AVI file, the format that is, and what you want to play it back on.
Standard DVD players will usually only play DVD, SCD and VCD formats.
Specialist mpeg4 DVD players will play Divx and Xvid formats as well.

For Divx and Xvid, if your player supports them, you just burn as a data cd or a data dvd.

If its a SVCD or a VCD then open Nero and select the Video/Pictures option from the CD part to burn those but if its a DVD youre burning then you can only burn the DVD files which are VOB, BUP and INF.

To burn the DVD you just drag the VIDEO_TS folder into the next window that appears in Nero after selecting DVD Video. You dont need the AUDIO_TS folder, thats empty anyway, unless you have extra languages in it.

For SVCD and VCD then you drag the whole 4 folders, EXT, MPEGAV, SEGMENT and VCD, into the window.

I have heard of people putting multiple SVCDs and VCDs on a single DVD but I think that would depend on the capabilities of youd DVD player. I think that you would have to select the burn as data option and put a folder containing the 4 folders for each film on to the dvd or maybe rename the 4 folders as xxx film 1, xxx film 2, xxx film 3 etc. You would have to experiment with those or buy a mpeg 4 capable DVD player  :)

The first post in this link tells you how to burn multiple S/VCDs to a single DVD Michelle.
You will need a program called DVD Lab to do it with though but I should think you will know how to get that

Thanks for the info sandra, thats great!

No I've not bought a new dvd player yet, so the ones I need are svcd or kvcd work fine.

Cheers again for everyone's input!  :)
