Updates won't install.
« on: November 21, 2005, 21:14 »
Hi,

I go to the automatic update site, click "download and install", they downloads sucessfully, but when they try to install, I get error messages "failed to install"

I've had this problem for about 8 months now, and I've managed  to keep it updated by installing them manually. (C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download)

I've tried the useless "help" page on the microsoft site, and I've googled this problem a number of times, because its basically annoying, there is no spyware/adware on my pc, and is in good condition apart from this.

However, the update i recently recieved can't be done manually.

Any ideas on what the problem is?

XP Home
1.8 celeron, 512mb ram
Cheers

Have you downloaded ALL the previous updates applicable to your computer Scotty?  Some updates depend on the correct installation of earlier ones and you can verify that by checking your installation history on the Windows Update site.  If you cannot find a probem in this area, then e-mail microsoft who will (surprisingly) take it very seriously and assign a troubleshooter to you who will sort it out by e-mail.  It happened to me once and I was amazed how tenacious they were!

No offence, but are you using an authentic version of Windows?  Unfortunately, Micro$oft updates these days check for licence authenticity, and won't install on *cough* 'unofficial' versions of Windows.

It is an authentic copy of windows, well I assume it is as the PC originally came from PC World.

Lots of info here, Scotty, if you want to pick through it.  Just a thought but have you tried temporarily disabling your Anti Virus program while performing the Windows Updates?  It's not usually advisable to do so, but I just wondered if something might be preventing the updates from installing, by protecting certain files on your PC?  Anyway, here's the link, and it's free!!
