Search File in Window
« on: December 03, 2005, 09:19 »
Hello everyone.  I am a firt time on this website and I am not sure if this is the right place I hope it is.
I have a strange problem when I click on any folders on my computer it opens a new window that is a search file window. It started about a month ago and its starting to drive me crazy. I am running windows XP and I have tried all of those windows upgrades
I am at my wits end and am thinking of taking  it into a computer repair place but am on a tight budget. I hope its not a virus or something.

Thanks

Well I hope your familiar with the registry. Its a place where you buy things for people that are about to get married. You will need to make sure not to order the microwave since everyone else is probably going to get that for them. Otherwise this sounds like your directory shell default value has gone all messy... or perhaps not (Btw say that 10 times fast)

1. Open Regedit (Goto Start -> Run -> Type "regedit" (No quotes of course then again I dont know why we need to say this :)))
2. Navigate to  HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell (its not too tricky use your mouse and click on the little arrowy things its all sorted alphabetically.
3. Edit the value data for (Default) to "none" (without the quotes) (To edit just double click on the default value)
4. Close regedit and your done (Clicky on that X thingy)

5. If that doesnt work you can always buy the microwave and place your harddrive in it.

Thanks DualBoy for clarifying what a registry was. I wasn't planning to go with the microwave anyway. I was leaning towards a blender.
I am not sure how to do this. It looks very confusing. You lost me at step number 2. I am really bad at this, can you please elaborate a bit more?

Its not really intended for people who dont know what they are doing but when you open Regedit theres a list on the left side of the different locations.

You navigate through them by expanding each part and looking for the subsection in that part then another subsection and so on.
Just keep clicking on the + sign at each entry and work your way down the list until you arrive at the last step suggested.

So the first part you open is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Expand that and look for Directory, its a long way down the page but as Dually says its aplahabetically listed so you should find it ok  :)

Expand that and look for shell

When you reach that and click on it you will see something in the right hand window that says Default.

Right click on it and select Modify and then type none and click ok, thats if it doesnt already say none.

Then close the window and see if its fixed it.

I hope thats a little clearer for you  :)

All good I sent her a reg file earlier and its up and running normally again. Strange how these things get messed up. Seen it before. There are a few weird ones like everytime ya boot you get multiple explorer shells and such. Off to play sudoku and sing songs about old men on mars.

Nice to see you Canadians looking after each other  :)

I see that you are both in Ontario, does that mean you are near each other or still hundreds of miles apart ?

Hi Guys, Sorry for the delayed Thank Yous to both DualBoy and Sandra. I really appreciate you both taking the time to help me solve my predicament. DualBoy and I are less than 100 miles apart... and even fewer kilometers apart. I guess Canadians do try to look after each other.
