Whoever compiled that list dont know much about guitar playing

They have Peter Green down at no 42 and Chuck Berry 22 places higher than him

Chuck Berry only knew one riff!     I can't believe Brian May is only at #24, and I really can't see that Hendrix should be #1, given that he was only around for a few years.  Technically, he would have been well outclassed today.  And where's Dave Meneketti from Y&T?  Never heard of them?  Download their track "I Believe In You", for some great guitar virtuosity.

Quite possibly, Clive, but as he's still alive and kicking, I'll let you confirm that.

Richard Thompson at no 142 ??? Sheesh... someone needs to get their priorities sorted out.  He's one of the most skillful and innovative guitarists of all time.
There is no opinion, however absurd, which men will not readily embrace as soon as they can be brought to the conviction that it is readily adopted.

I quite agree, Gill!  And I thought John Martyn might at least get a mention.

"Criteria: - Guitarists are ranked for their impact, influence, creativity, versatility, originality, technical skill and lasting popularity in the genre of Rock guitar."

On that basis, Hendrix certainly deserves a place near the top - and I can't imagine too many guitarists disagreeing.  However, the compilers of this list have made the usual mistake of confusing Fashion with Music.  As a result, a number of these artists seem to be included simply because they once appeared on someone's favourite record.  I mean...  Bo Diddley???

Whilst it's nice to have one's musical taste 'vindicated' by seeing our fave musos published in a list, it would be far more meaningful if professional guitarists were judged by their peers, rather than bedroom air-guitarists.  Perhaps then we might see the inclusion of a few more gifted players and a lot less three-chord wonders.

...and while I'm off on one, where's John Scofield and Larry Carlton?

Just had another read through that list and noticed that Dave Edmunds is missing.

I never thought he was that special until he made Sabre Dance with Love Sculpture.

Thats one of my favourite instrumentals of all time and he played it brilliantly.

Love Sculpture only had Dave Edmunds on guitar playing the lead and rythm.
They were a 3 piece with just a drummer and a bass guitarist in addition to him which makes him, in my opinion, a much better guitarist than he often gets credited with being.

Robert Fripp is a quite extraordinary technician, Cam.  If you ever get the opportunity to hear a King Crimson track entitled Moto Perpetuo, you'll realise exactly what I mean.  It's a fast, complex, piece which you'd normally expect to play using thumb and three fingers.  Fripp plays it with a plectrum.

Around 30 years ago, a new guitar and me were spending the weekend at the house of Fripp's adopted mother (don't ask!), when he walked in to the room, spotted the guitar which I was now trying unsuccessfully to hide beneath my chair, and asked me to play him something.  I burbled something about really being a percussionist, whereupon he asked if I'd like to hear him play.  I thought quickly, chose the only acoustic KC track I could remember and he played it flawlessly.  Nice bloke.

Any road up, I really wouldn't mind being able to bash out a tune with the same degree of skill as any one of this bunch:

Jimi Hendrix
Rory Gallagher
Joe Walsh
Robin Trower
Phil Manzanera
Larry Carlton
John Mclaughlin
Al DiMeola
Ry Cooder
Eric Johnson
