Hi, My motherboard (VL400) will only take up to 512mb ram. What will happen if I should add 256mb to it? I mainly need it for speech recognition as 'upping' the ram would make dictation more fluid.
Otherwise what would be the most sensible option do you think?

So the maximum you can have in your motherboard is 512mb? How much do you currently have in it?

I have 2* 256mb in the two only slots but I have a 512mb card available

ok, so each slot can take a max of 512? I think you will be suprised of the increase you will get, though make sure you have the right ram before you stick it in!

No Sam, the max the board will take (HP VL400) is 512 mb!
I currently have 2*256mbs, do you reckon I could get away with 1*256 and 1*512mb without any harm?

It shouldnt do any harm its just that the bios may not recognise the ram above a total of 512mb.

Try it with just the single 512mb in and if it boots ok and recognises it as 512 then add a stick of 256 and see if it still boots ok and recognises the full size.

You could check the manufacturers site to see if theres a bios upgrade available that may raise the ram limit as I think that the maximum ram is goverened by the bios.

Thanks Sandra,I would have liked to have said it worked fine but have now realised I bought the wrong one!

?HP Server SDRAM 512mb pc133 ECC Reg Dimm 168 pin? ? everything correct except the bloomin? ?Server?, -not compatable.
Must pay even closer attention next time... Grrr!

www.crucial.com/uk guarantee memory compatability, or they refund you (providing you have given the correct information in the first place), so might be worth giving them a try.
