My Pc shows the windows 98 logo, but never starts, i can see the bars moving down at the border and the sound of the disk, but that's all, my nephew shut the pc with the power button, but i am not sure if it was the reason, what can i do from scratch?. the only thing i made is fdisk/ mbr, but i didn`t made "copy sys C" , because i got no boot diskette, is this essential?
And i tried to start in safe mode, only works DOS in safe mode!!, just the last option of the six ones.

How long have you had that computer running that installation of windows 98?

Can you run SCANDISK from DOS in safe mode ?

That may sort it.

Yes, i ran scandisk a few minutes ago, but the same thing, some files i chose to fix because of space, nothing more...there`s an incomplete message about an vxd, freezes before it can show the complete error message--i took out all the cards except video and the same.
About the other questin, it got win98 for a long time

Vxd errors are common in win98. Normally i would tell you to reinstall but i doubt you have a win98 cd.

Here is a free app you can use to make a bootdisk. Bootdisk

That will get you into dos and give you a few options.

Here is the site that gives a fix for vxd problems. Ive never tested it so im not sure if it'll work, but its worth a try.

Here are the files i extracted from my win98se cd that that website says are required.

1. VXD files (Double click and extract these files into a folder on your bootdisk)

2. (Your going to need to use a few commands when you boot your computer using the bootdisk. )

First you need to get into the folder with the files you want copied. So if you named the folder bob on the bootdisk then the command to get into directory bob would be cd A:\bob.

Then once your in that directory you can use this blanket copy command.

copy *.* c:\windows\system and then again to copy *.* c:\windows\system\vmm32 (If it ask you if you want to overwrite select yes)

Restart your computer and thats it. Again ive never tested this method and im going only by what that website said to do, but that does look like the easiest way to fix your problem without having a win98 cd to reinstall.
