Lycos launches Wi-Fi finder
« on: August 09, 2006, 19:01 »
Lycos has launched a database of thousands of the UK's Wi-Fi hotspots and is also offering a free, downloadable hotspot "sniffer".

The database and sniffer let people type in a postcode to find their nearest wireless internet connection.

The sniffer is an application that will sit on a person's desktop with the hotspot information pre-loaded onto it. Updates can be download to it or people can add new hotspots as they find them.

The tool also covers spots in Sweden, Spain, Germany, France and Portugal.

In the UK, the tool covers more than 10,000 Wi-Fi connections in more than 1,500 towns and covers almost 300 providers. It includes details of paid-for hotspots run by companies including T-Mobile, The Cloud and BT, as well as free-to-access Wi-Fi points.

Jeffrey Lee, managing director of lycos.co.uk said: ?This gadget solves the problem faced by many a laptop user of wandering around unknown streets in search of Wi-Fi spot. Now you can track a wireless connection across Europe, speeding up the process of getting hooked to the internet.?
