FS 2004 Install Problem
« on: September 29, 2006, 12:35 »
Hi,

Need some help please.

I've tried loading Flight Simulator 2004 several times, but I keep getting this error:

9\sound\lessonsp5-26.wav.

I've defragmented and tried installing it in safe mode, but I still get the same problem.
When I tried installing it in safe mode I got a pop up saying that the sound card wasn't found. Maybe a clue?

My OS is winxp and DirectX 9c is installed.

Thanks for any advice.

John

Hi John and :welcome:

I cant find anything that mentions your error message but if you go through this list then you may manage to resolve the problem :

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258496/en-us

Looking at the options I would suggest trying either the creating a new user account or the install to a seperate drive, if you have one, or both.

Re the sound card, the error message saying its a .wav makes it sound like its an audio file problem
Although I didnt think that audio drivers loaded in safe mode  :?

When you are in normal windows does the device manager show your sound card is installed correctly ?

Hi Sandra,

Thanks for the welcome

Well, I haven't got a separate drive, so I can't try that. When I'm in normal windows mode the device manager says the sound card is working correctly.

I have tried 2 instalation options. With the 1st option the instalation stopped on the 2nd CD. With the 2nd option the instalation stopped on the 1st CD, and they stopped with the same error: 9\sound\lessonsp5-26.wav

I'm going to have alook at the link now. I'm not to PC savy so I might not try anything too brash!

I'll be back

John

Btw, my PC already has two other Flight Simulators installed without problem.

Hi John, and  :welcome:

I'm not really a gamer, but just a thought, is this a 5.1 'surround sound' game, and do you have a 5.1 sound card?  Maybe a compatability issue with the sound card?  It does seem to be one particular .wav file which is causing the problem.  What is the exact wording of the error message?

Hi Simon, and thanks for the welcome!

Well, I've had a look at the requirements for the game regarding the sound card, and that's all it says, sound card. Nothing special there.

Below is the error. I'm in Spain, which means that my windows is in 'Espaņol' so here is the translation. The word'archivo' appeared a couple of times. I translated it as file. Could have been 'archive'.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2005 found an error in the disk when writing in the file C:\program file\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Sound\lessonsp5-26.wav. Make sure that the disk isn't full and restart the insallation program.

Thanks loads for your help.

It's possible you have a faulty copy of the installation disc - does anyone you know have another one you could try, or would it be possible to try installing the game on another PC to see if you get the same error?

The "archivo" could relate to a required zipped cab file which its unable to read, theyre often referred to as archives.

Its strange that its stopping at the same point on two different cds, that would indicate to me a problem with the OS files and not the actual cds for the game.

You could try checking your XP installation by going to Start, then click on Run and type in SFC /SCANNOW  (note the space between C and /) and click ok, have your XP cd in the drive as it will copy files from it if it finds any missing or corrupted ones.

That should make sure that the system files are intact, then try installing FS again.

Ooops!

I've got a clone PC. Here in Spain when you buy one of those you don't get the windows CD.
I suppose I'll have to contact the shop where I bought it.

In the meantime thanks very much for your help. I'll let you know what happens.

I've had an idea. See what you think.

I've read that in order to solve wav problems (if that's what the problem is)it's a simple case of updating windows media. Now, I've got the latest already installed, so I could remove it and download it again.

What do you think?

Wont do any harm to try it although I have had FS 2004 installed on my pc for a long time now and it worked fine with whichever version of windows media was on at that time, without the latest updates available today.

the .wav file extension for the game might be disabled in windows media

you might check and see if your anti virus or firewall have disabled the .wav file its trying to use
or try another media player all together

I have some games that the sound and graffics that use a certain file designation that had been disabled in windows media

this link might help some

I updated the media player, but the problem still persists.
Two things I'm going to try:
1. Get my bro-in-law to put it in his PC. He won't be home for a few days.
2. Look for the sound drivers on the net. It's an intergrated motherboard. ASROCK K7S41GX

Fingers crossed.

I've found out that the problem is with the game.
It's a common problem called GAME6, which is on
the 2nd CD.
I'm going to take it back to the shop.

Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
