Asus p2b AGP mobo won't POST... please help
« on: February 18, 2003, 10:17 »
UNIT --
- ASUS P2b AGP Main Board,
- Pentium 2 / 333Mhz Processor (I believe)
- ATI 3d rage pro AGP vid.card

Hey all, great site you guys have here. Anyway getting right to the problem.

I got a computer from my grandmother yesterday and it arrived essentially D.O.A. from someone she works for. I'm stuck figuring out the problem. I've tried removing ram, reseating the CPU and checking the power supply. Nothing seems to work. Here are the symptoms. Power on results in...

- No display
- Power supp. fan spools up
- CPU fan does >NOT< spool up (plugs into mothrboard)
- Hard drive spools up
- CD-ROM tray is operable
- No beeps
- flashing LED on case (red)
- tried removing IDE cables from all peripherals, still no post, prompts or beeps.
- CPU fan was pulled and tested out of the box with a 9V battery, it works fine. (i.e. not a bb failure)
- Tried pulling battery to reset CMOS, no luck. same prob.

Anyone have any idea what this problem could be?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately I'm not one of the techie guys but there will be plenty around later and I'm sure they will be able to help sort out your problem.

Hi deltaseven :welcome:

Sounds like you've tried everything ;)

What worries me about your problem is that there are no beeps from the motherboard. If it were working correctly, you would at least have the POST beeps, even if nothing else works.

The fact that the fan doesn't spin up, even though it is working OK off a battery, suggests that possibly there is a fault with the CPU. Do you have another PC to test the CPU?

The only other thing I can think of is that possibly the BIOS has become corrupt :(

I'll post back if I think of anything else.

Hi Deltaseven, welcome to the forum

I'm worried that the CPU fan doesn't start spinning, yet it is ok.

I'm wondering if you have a dead motherboard. As Sean has suggested, it would be a good idea to try the CPU in another mobo if you can. Alternatively can you try another CPU?

Sean, could the power supply regulators on the mobo have failed?
