Vista will need antivirus software
« on: November 14, 2006, 13:24 »
Microsoft's Jim Allchin has said that people using Windows Vista will need to use third-party antivirus protection. The statement contradicts reports that he told journalists that the security features within Vista should be enough to withstand malicious attacks.

Allchin recently told reporters that his son was using a PC with no antivirus software installed. However, this was interpreted by some as meaning that Vista wouldn't need a third-party antivirus program.

In his blog, Allchin clarified the point he was trying to make. ?Windows Vista includes new security features that can dramatically help improve our customers' security for certain situations? [but] Windows Security Center, a great feature in Windows Vista, specifically encourages the use of antivirus software,? he wrote.

"Now, the comments have unfortunately been cited out of context implying that I said Windows Vista users shouldn't use antivirus. I want to be clear, most users will use some form of antivirus software, and that will be appropriate for their scenarios," Allchin continued.

Work on Windows Vista has been completed and the company are preparing to roll it out to business users in the coming weeks. Consumers, however, will not see the operating system until the end of January next year.
