here I am on dial up......................


I moved house a while ago........... (yes again)  and since then I have been on dial up cos there seems to be a problem with AOL broadband, I am disconnecting every 5 mins. I had the line tested, no problems, I upped the gain..... ok. I keep asking aol what it is and they keep suggesting "rubbish" they told me to update my drivers, as I have to use an earlier driver to be able to use my crossover cable (networking) something they don't support, and don't understand. yet as I said to them it was all fine before i moved so I'm not changing anything, they have to sort out the exchange. oh they told me they would have to revert me from the gold package 4mb to the silver package 2mb due to a problem at the exchange. the exchange say I can have 4 no probs.

I am sooooooooo close to going to telewest cos they have boxes in here already and i can have phone and tv channels cheaper than I get aol for. but i don't think I can use the cross over cable with cable broadband..........

anyone have any views on this lot?

Only that they don't call it AOHell for nothing.    Surely if you went to Telewest, they would supply the equipment?

telewest don't support networking.............? but you can do it. they just won't help you lol

same as aol don't support crossover cable networking.

but I will ring telewest tomorrow and ask them.

its just i think the 5 mins disconnection thing should be straight forward but no.

ah well.........

Go to telewest Michelle.
They give you the modem which will have an ethernet connection.

Buy a cable router, very cheap these days poss under £20 and that wil connect to both pcs with a patch cable (straight through not crossed).

Better than doing as you did before as each pc can be on independant of the other

Oh yes I do get a modem with it, so does that mean I can still use the cross over cable.

If not with this cable network modem do I need to buy a cable separate ? I think I do..... do I ?

NTL supply a cable modem with USB and Ethernet connections, I am not sure if Telwest do the same.

I would still go for a router from the ethernet modem then a sep cable to each pc as each pc can be online independant of the other.

If however Telewest supply a similar modem to NTL then you can use the USB connection to your main pc and use your crossover cable as you did when on AOL.
Then it would be like you had it before and the pc connected to the modem would have to be on for teh second pc to be able to get online.

The router is the far better option and not that dear as I showed you earlier

My first original internet connection was internet connection sharing to another computer (2 computers connected by crossover cable) to aol dial up

ohoho was that fun....

It should be against the law for AOL to have broadband access. around here where I live, the cable company's cable internet works together with AOL and is overpriced, so i use dsl

Yes you are right ............. but we all knew that
I have ordered telewest now but unsure if I will get set up before xmas.......... aol in the meantime are still trying to sort this out........ well so they say.

 I am refusing to ring the 7p per min help line (to talk to someone that doesn't know what day it is for an hour) and am insisting they call me........... nothing now for a few days. Surprise Surprise!

I just wonder why everyone is on broadband when you can have AOL dialup for the same price!

only when I mess around with my local network... I have 5 machines including two wirelessly (one is my Wii) all connected to it and no problems! :-)

They are coming on the 5th to set me up    - so with that router what leads do I need to get ?

They should give you an ethernet lead with their modem that will connect to your pc or a router.

You will need 2 ethernet leads to go from your router to each pc.
Often a router will come with one lead but check when you order it as it should say if it does or doeant.
If it does come with a lead and the cable company give you a lead with the modem then you can use the lead that you have already been using between the two pcs.

The lead you used from pc to pc will be a crossed one, all the others will be straight.
Usually you would use straight leads from a modem to a router and from a router to your pcs but routers today seem quite happy to use either crossed or straight ones so hopefully you dont need to buy any more.
