Mine also failed - but only on lack of system RAM.  512Mb installed, 1Gb recommended.  That's just for the basic version.  Additional upgrades would be required for other Vista versions.  Looks like I'll be waiting a while, but seeing as they have already announced SP1, it looks like, similarly to XP, they are selling us public beta versions!  I think I'll hold on till it's finished, by which time, most of my other software will have caught up.  My guess is that XP is good for at least another 2 years.

well its now pretty easy to install programs in linux, just use the inbuilt installers and most now come precompiled. Of course, you cant use all the windows tools you are familiar with, well you can emulate some but not all.
