Dell Laptop RAM
« on: March 01, 2007, 22:29 »
Currently have 128Mb RAM in my Dell Latitude C600 laptop, Samsung M464S1724DTS-L7A, PC133S-333-542.
Want to upgrade to 2x256Mb RAM and bought two sticks of M464S3254ETS-L7A.

Trouble is they didn't work either with my original stick in (said wrong memory address) or either stick on its own (wouldn't boot at all, just switched off).
Seems that all 256Mb sticks have 325 instead of 172, so I suspect the problem comes with the D being replaced by E.
Everyone I talked to said they should work, even with different combinations of letters DTS or L7A changed!
Anyone know what the Samsung coding is or where I can find it deciphered?
Dell always quote PC100 RAM for these laptops, but PC133 clearly works- though many say it's pot luck!

PC 100 and 133 SDRAM were very temperamental.
133 should run in a 100 mobo but at 100 speeds.

The same stick could work in one board and not in an identical one.
The only way to be certain of ram working with a mobo is to get the ones recommended by the motherboard manufacturer or from someone like Crucial, if you use their memory checker.
I did fit some ram for someone whod bought some after using Crucials memory checker and it worked fine by itself but it wouldnt work with the ram that was already happily running in that PC  :dunno:

Trouble is that Crucial's 2x256Mb PC133 RAM is ~£90 and their equivalent PC100 RAM is substantially so much higher that it's cheaper to buy a another C600 laptop with 512Mb RAM in it!
On the other hand, my Laptop came with Samsung PC133 RAM in it from new and it's much, much cheaper to buy Samsung RAM, particularly off eBay.
Does anyone know what Samsung's codes are? As I said, I bought two new sticks of M464S3254ETS-L7A for £30 (now refunded) to replace my single stick of Samsung 128Mb RAM, M464S1724DTS-L7A, both PC133S-333-542.
Seems that L7A can be changed for L1H, L75 etc and I think is to do with speed, whereas the DTS can become ETS, CTS,CT2, CT1 etc and I haven't a clue what they denote!
Only other thing I can do is buy an identical 128Mb stick and settle for 256Mb total!
