A social network without uploads
« on: March 07, 2007, 22:58 »
A new service has launched that allows you to create your own webpages, similar to those on social networking sites such as MySpace or Facebook, without the need to upload any content.

izimi went live earlier this week and gives its community the ability to create a homepage with a unique URL and to be able to offer visitors an unlimited amount of any type of content from images to video. This is because it doesn't use any central servers - your PC hosts the content and does all the work.

?izimi addresses so many of the things that are wrong with the existing user-generated content and social networking sites,? said Marc Lyne, chief executive of izimi.

?Using our simple service, people are now able to completely control their own media, to publish and serve direct from their own PCs. So, an important question is raised: why should we spend time uploading our content to everyone else's servers??

The application needed to publish your own webpages is free to download from izimi but people viewing your content don't need to have any special software.

?izimi lets anyone publish and serve any web content to anyone without them having to have any technical knowhow. Other people just use a web browser to see that content so there are no restrictions on use,? Lyne said.

Only files that you select are available for others to view so no one will be able to access areas of your PC that you wish to keep private. The bandwidth that most broadband customers enjoy should be able to cope with the likely number of visitors izimi members will get, according to the company.
