It's like Google Maps...for space.

Wikisky is a draggable, zoomable, web-based star map. And if you click on a star or other object, it brings up a page with all the information you could want on it, including recent articles and astrophotos that contain that object. And it does lots more. Go explore.

When I first saw it I thought it was just another crappy planetarium programme, but when I started to delve a bit deeper it impressed the hell out of me.  I had no idea the SDSS was as good as that!  Now we are all professionals!   ;D  Oh, I forgot - you already are!!   8-)

I need to have more of  play with it  8-)

I need to have more of  play with it  8-)

the sdss is a mostly a galaxy survey, looking at a quite large numbers, millions - so you wouldn't expect them to image things that a non professional might be interested in. I have to say though for an online planetarium there are lots of options.

but then again.. if you just use it to find out info on objects and where they are in the sky and a free internet planetarium, if you are stargazing anywhere and wanna know what you can see then it is really quite cool and useful.
