MPEG To DivX Conversion
« on: April 11, 2007, 12:15 »
Can anyone suggest some freeware to convert MPEG files into DivX format?

Virtual Dub will do it providig that you have the Divx codec installed on your pc.
Heres a guide for how to do it :

Thanks, Sandra, but VirtualDub doesn't seem to like MPEG2 files :( .

Have you tried one of its variants like NanDub or Virtual DubMod ?

Gordian Knot and Auto Gordian Knot I am sure will do mpeg2 to DivX or Xvid, the auto one is easier I think and both are free.

Hi Sandra

I've installed AVI.net which seems to be doing the business, albeit slowly.

Tried Auto Gordian Knot but it wouldn't work unless I was online, which I thought was a bit fishy.

It could be that it was checking for updates, Sandra.

I've got to say I like AVI.net.  It's producing very good quality videos and you can set a target file size before you start converting.  It's a pity it's rather slow and you can't edit the movie, but those are minor quibbles when you think that you can get a 64 minute recording crammed into 550 Mb and still be perfectly watchable.

Yes mpeg4 is a very acceptable format as long as you dont overcompress it.

I thought that you had WinAvi already though, thats about the fastest converter.
