dts files ?.
« on: April 08, 2007, 12:16 »
I downloaded some music files, and when I tried to play them it came up with, Windows can't open this file.

I Googled dts and still don't understand what it all means, can I convert these files?  :dunno:

This program makes them :

Looks like Cyberlink Power DVD 7 and earlier versions will play and burn them to DVD but I dont know if they will play on a TV DVD player or just on the pc afterwards.

Converter and instructions here MB :

http://dtsguide.de.vu/

Click on English at the top of the page, unless you are ok with German  ;)

Then click on the link on the line that has :

Fast method for DTS conversion to stereo AC3 added (Link)

You can download the program from the next page and follow the instructions on it.

Looks a bit complicated but I am sure that if you take your time and follow the instructions carefully you will manage it  :)

Thanks for all of that Sandra.

I just looked at the files again and noticed a "read me" text, so I did. This what it says;

These are DTS WAV files.  I ripped them from a CD image since I like

to have songs each in their own separte file for making mixed CDs

and playlists.

To play them, it's best to use DTS hardware, but still amazing
when you just play them on a normal 5.1 system with software
that supports DTS decoding like VLC or foobar2000 with dts addon.

If you want to burn them to CD, don't recode them in any way, just

rename the files from .dts to a .wav file extension and burn. The

.dts is just to let software know that it's a DTS file so it software

decodes it.  This allows you to play it even if you don't have DTS

hardware.  Great for people (like me) who have a 5.1 setup, but

don't have DTS hardware.

As for the source, I got it from a torrent.  The torrent said:
==================================
TECHNICAL NOTES:
This is compilation of the Best Of Album
which was never released in Quad. The songs
are taken from quad reel sources and converted
to DTS for your listening pleasure.

Michael did try changing them to mp3 files, didn't work. So I guess I'll try changing them to wav and see what happens.

I downloaded the program, can't remember how to open a rar file, time for bed I think :snooze:

If I get a chance tomorrow, well later today, I try again. I'll be away after that, for a week or so, it might have to wait till I get back.

You need winrar to open a rar file.
As long as its installed just right click on the file and click on extract then browse for where you want it to extract to  :)

I have winrar and I still couldn't get it to open, so I read the text;

Tranzcode v0.40 (beta) rel. (March 2006)

http://tranzcode.byethost22.com/

Tranzcode.exe is a console (commandline) application (i.e. requires command entry in a "DOS" window)
To run it, open a "Command Prompt" window in WinXP found in the "Accessories" folder (black windowed icon)
Either copy Tranzcode.exe into your i.e.  'C:\WINDOWS\system32\' directory to save you the trouble of setting it's path or copying it into every directory where your working files are located.

Here is a quick guide to help you run some commands using Tranzcode. (Tranzcode commands in a nutshell)

When executing any commands in the console, use double quotes around any dir path or filename that you enter which contains any space characters.
i.e.    tranzcode "my ac3file.ac3"
or     tranzcode "D:\wicked dts files\test.dts"
If you do not specify the output prefix name, then Tranzcode will use the source name and append a channel identifier to label the channel [i.e.    <source name>-FL  (means Front Left channel)]
tranzcode "dtswav test file.wav"
result will output several mono wavs depending on the number of channels found (i.e. if 5.1) The output filename are: dtswav test file-FL.wav, dtswav test file-FR.wav, dtswav test file-C.wav, dtswavtest file-LFE.wav, dtswav test file-SL.wav, dtswav test file-SR.wav

And that's just part of it?  ???
I'm not to good with this sort of stuff, I don't understand it at all. I'll leave it to computer experts like you, I like to keep it simple...yes I know, just like me  :crazy:

But my genius son read the text from the torrent;

"To play them, it's best to use DTS hardware, but still amazing
when you just play them on a normal 5.1 system with software
that supports DTS decoding like VLC or foobar2000 with dts addon."

and downloaded a VLC player   http://www.free-codecs.com/download/VideoLAN.htm

and it worked a treat, this computer course he's doing is paying off.

I don't know if I want to burn them to CD, I think I'll leave that to another day when I have more time.

The VLC player will play it. Free and legal ----> here

VLC will pretty much play any type of media file out there.

The VLC player is great, I downloaded some clips from youtube and transfered them to Michael's shared folder for him to watch but he can't watch them using WMP and he doesn't want to use VLC. What codec does he need for WMP, he has audio but no vision?

Reading what I posted earlier it looks like he can just rename the file extension from .dts to .wav then it should play ok.

He may need to go into Tools/Folder Options/View and untick Hide file extensions for known files, in order to be able to change the extension.

Sorry Sandra these aren't dts files, just clips from youtube,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM-H7FjznyM&mode=related&search=

I downloaded them using the youtube downloader, I can watch them fine, they automatically go through the VLC. When I copied and pasted them into Michael's shared folder he can't watch them on his WMP, audio only.
It does state on the youtube downloader that if you only get audio then you are missing a codec.
I have no idea how to get, or where to get the missing codec, as I don't know what one it is? If only he would use VLC, but he doesn't like that program :dunno:

Maybe I should have posted a new thread for this, sorry for the confusion.
