Check broaband activation

Hi All,

A friend is waiting for their broadband to be activated - they were told Tuesday, then today, but the router is still not showing as an active DSL connection.

I have tried the router on a different broadband line (they have 2 lines - 1 work, 1 home) and it all works fine.

So, is there a website or any way of telling if the line has been activated for broadband - the people on the helpdesk don't seem to know one way or the other!

Some ISP websites have a maximum speed checker to see which packages you can get.
One of these may tell you if its already activated or not.

Ok thanks, will have a look through a few.

Have been round and thought that they need a micro filter on all outputs of their phone line.  I disconnected all phones from the phone line and tried the broadand router and microfilter alone in one socket, but it still didn't work.

Think they might need a BT engineer round to check out how the phone lines are set up.

You only need a filter on an outlet that has a phone connected.
Ideally the modem should be on the main socket not on an extension.

Yeah thats the problem, theres so many sockets we can't work out which ones the main one.  Will go round today and disconnect everything and try them with a phone one by one to work out which is which!

The main socket is usually the one which is on a box, rather than flush with the wall, but if that doesn't give any clues, if you unscrew the fascia on each socket, the main one should have another socket inside it, if you see what I mean.

Ok thanks - will have a look later. Yes there is 2 box type sockets and 3 'flush' type ones.

Should hopefully sort it out later - will let you know  ;)

My main socket is downstairs in the electric cupboard, where it would be completely impractical to even have a phone, let alone a computer!

Presumably a newish  house or flat then Simon.
They tend to install them like that along with the mains wiring for ease of access from the outside.

OK, identified the main socket - was in the master bedroom. Opened it up and it has a cable that comes out and can be traced to another extension, then thats link to another extension then one more.

Even so, disconnected everything, plugged the router into the main socket (with a microfilter) and it still didn't work.

Not sure what else to try - think they will have to get an engineer out or maybe cancel the whole idea.

Maybe they have a "Dacs" line which wont work.


The engineer will need to sort that up the pole.


That was the case for mine and my parents at the time of getting broadband.

Ah, didn't think of that. Ours was a DACs line that needed sorting.

They already have 2 lines and 1 already has broadband (business) so they want broadband on the personal line too.

Is it possible for broadband to already work on 1 line (business), but not the other if the line is DACs?

Will suggest that to them.
