I just read that 8x AGP Pro sockets work at 1.5v rather than the more usual 3.3v. Apparently some boards refure to boot unless a 1.5v card is installed.

Does anyone know whether David^s mobo is a 1.5v or 3.3v AGP?

Looks like it should be ok Adept.These are specifications from MSI site :

  ? One AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) slot.
  - Supports AGP 3.0 4x/8x.
? Six 32-bit PCI bus slots (support 3.3v/5v PCI bus interface).

Could it just be that theres a fault on that card that enables it to work in some boards but not in these others hes tried it in?

I'm a bit late on this thread, but I thought I'd add my bit for reference if anyones looking @ backdated help, as well as to increase my post stats  ;D

Please, anyone correct me if I'm wrong - I'm working from memory here.

AGP details:

8x = AGP 3.0 supports 1.5v cards.
4x = AGP 2.0 supports 1.5v/3.3v cards.
2x = AGP 1.0 supports 3.3v cards.

Some 8x boards now support 3.3v 4x AGP. As far as I'm aware, you cannot use 2x AGP - THIS WILL DAMAGE THE PORT.

There are also AGP PRO 2.0 ports - lets not get in to that LOL  ???

Also, just FYI:

PCI ports transfer data at a rate of 33MHz.
AGP transfers at 66MHz.

Therefore 8x66MHz = 528Mhz, so thats where the main advantage of AGP graphics over PCI comes in.

You're spot on there K'

Some mobo's with 8x AGP ports have a jumper to change the voltage, so its always worth checking your manual carefully. My mobo (Asus) has a nice feature that lights an LED if a 3.3v card is inserted, and will prevent the pc from booting up as a protection measure.
