Hmm... most CDs will play with scratches on the surface, because the laser reads the data on the silver 'foil' inside the disc.  I tend to find fingermarks cause more problems than scratches, and these are easily removed by going 'hhhhhuuhhhhh' on the disc and rubbing it on your jumper!

Rubbing on the jumper trick works for me.

I have noticed that CD's I have made myself and not played for ages, seem to have a very slight film of something on them and a little rub with a soft cloth works. They only seem to have a problem playing in my home stereo, but are fine in the car?
