Yahoo Mail - Problems with attachments
« on: November 20, 2007, 20:20 »
I am using yahoo mail on a computer running XP and ie 6 and everytime an email with attachment is sent (photo or movie) it will not display. So say I go to download the pic attachment and then go to open it just opens in windows and says "no preview available".

Any ideas?

Could this be a file association problem?  Try right clicking one of the files, and selecting 'Open with...', then choose 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer'.  If it works, tick the box to always open that type of file with that application, and it should repair the association.

It doesn't seem to give you the option. It does it with movie clips too. It just asks you if you wish to open, save or more

It works for my account on my pc running vista.....I have just tried it here at work running xp and it doesn't come up with the more option......it comes up with open, save and cancel. errrrmmmmmm  :dunno:

Could it be the version of internet explorer? Or a service pack not installed?

Oh that's interesting!  I also have a Yahoo account and I've just received a picture attachment that wouldn't open.  However, when I downloaded it into Outlook Express it opened without any problem at all.

I am having to click on save, download the file to a folder on my desktop and then playing it that way......annoying!

Thunderbird and Sea Monkey (Mozilla) mail has always worked that way.  It's a security device to stop executable files from launching when you open the email, but admittedly, it doesn't usually do it with straightforward images.  Maybe Yahoo mail has taken the idea a step further, and won't allow the opening of any attachments from the email, without saving them first?

That doesn't really explain why it happens on one machine and not the other.....  :-\

No, it doesn't, and I'm afraid I have no more ideas, but maybe it wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade to IE7, as it's supposed to be more secure than IE6, and may just reset some options which might rectify things.  Also, check for Windows Updates, although it's not a bad idea to have these set to download automatically, as it saves getting a whole load in one go.
