Topic: Is my mouse goosed?

Hi, everyone.

I have started to have problems with my Optical Mouse.  Nine times out of ten when I click something it seems to double-click.  For example, if I have more than one window open and I want to close the active window, it closes not only the active window but also the one directly following it.  If I click on a link, it opens two windows or tabs with the link.  If I try to move the cursor to insert a word in a sentence, it highlights the following word.

I have looked in Control Panel > Mouse and it is set to double-click.  Is it time to nip to Argos for a replacement?

Mice and electric kettles don't seem to last any time at all these days Dave.  On one machine I've replaced just one mouse in 2007 but on the other it's no less than 3.     OK OK I admit that some only cost me £2 from Tesco's but beware those three little words "Made in China" .

Does it make any difference if you set it to single click, Dave?

If a new mouse is on the cards, I can highly recommend one of these.

I seem to wear a mouse out every 6-8 months, typically the earliest symptom is a false double-click. TweakUI can help for a while...

If you want a decent mouse buy a "Logitech" optical mouse, be prepared to pay around a $100.00 for a decent one that will last, i bought one of these over 3 years ago,its still going strong. Avoid buying cheap mice!

I've my Kensington for over 3 years now, and bought a second one recently to attach to my laptop.

After buying three mice in one year, including a $35 hp mouse that lasted a month, I got the Logitech G5 . It hasn't given me a lick of trouble since. The hp mouse was a wireless rechargeable and it doesn't hold a candle to the G5. It was well worth ~$60. My ut clan wanted me to get the cordless G7, but it was $20 more at the time and i didn't feel like spending more money on double As.

I bought Michael a MX 518 gaming mouse and a G15 gaming keyboard, and he loves them.

He uses his keyboard for most things (keyboard short cuts), me, I'm the opposite, I use my mouse for most things.

Learning all those short cuts, isn't a short cut for me.

i must be the only one who doesn't have such bad luck with mice... plus I get nice and cheap ones (with cables!). touch wood I won't have a problem now I have said this!

Is it cordless?

No.  Can't see the point of cordless mice or keyboards.  Why would you want to use it away from your computer screen?

I agree of keyboards, Simon, but cordless might have the advantage of not having to push the wire around all the time.

they also are quite nifty when giving talks - as you can use them as a tool for moving the slides on whilst wondering around the room - though saying that I think one of those combination slide and laser pointers are better.
