A new free media player
« on: February 03, 2008, 03:18 »
I have been having a problem playing a HD video which came as a multi rar file and extracted as an MKV file.
The video is fine but the audio will only play on the players I have tried in stereo and not full 5.1  :(
When spdif is selected using VLC it has a very rapid echo type of effect, selecting 5.1 I get background audio only, no dialogue  ???
If I select stereo then it plays fine but obviously I cant get the best audio experience just using the stereo setting.

I was looking for different players hoping one may play it properly and came across this one called Kantaris Media Player :

http://www.kantaris.org/

It says its based on VLC and is open source so it will hopefully be developed further by its users giving the developers feedback and support.
It seems to play most audio and video files, unfortunately it only plays the one I am trying to play in stereo so I expect that the audio track is either faulty or somehow hasnt been recorded as full 5.1  :(
It also claims  .rar file support. ( Play rar files without having to extract the content), although I have just tried it on a rar file that has a ready to burn DVD inside it and it wont play that.

Anyway its free, looks quite nice and its easy to use and plays lots of normal as well as weird file types and I think I will be using it for a lot of stuff from now on, I still wont give up on VLC altogether though so I will probably alternate them  :)

Almost forgot to mention it has a nice trailer preview feature in it as well, Lona was telling me earlier about a film shes just watched called Bucket List with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson in it that didnt sound like my type of film from what she said but I just watched the trailer from a link in this program and it looks very good  :)

you'll have to keep us informed of how it goes Sandra, its good to try new/better players sometimes.

I just had a look at the site and also at the very small forum http://www.kantaris.org/forum/ and it seems its still in the beta version and doesnt get very good reports so far. have you seen them.

I read the forum but it seems that there was a previous forum that got closed down and this is a new one that replaced it without saving the earlier posts.

There are too few comments to make any conclusive judgement on, so I think its worth trying and making your own mind up about it.

I havent found anything I dont like about it yet and after I posted about it I clicked on the Last.FM tab and got a good selection of tracks to listen to.
