Sharing Dial Up Over Wireless??
« on: March 12, 2003, 15:18 »
Hi All,

Finally recieved the wireless kit this morning and just setting it up.  (Delay with manufacturers).

I've got a netgear DG824M ADSL Modem/Wirelss Router and MA401 PCMCIA Card

Anyway everything is working - I'm able to chuck files from one pc to the laptop and back again - which is great.

I need to know though how i share a dial-up connection over this.  I am awaiting Broadband and took the gamble of buying the DG824M anyway!

Any advice / experiences with setting up Dial up to be shared over a Wireless network would be great.  I heard theres some sort of problem with IP allocations ??  The Dial Up will be connected to the phone line on the PC.

Both PC and Laptop are running WinXP.

Thanks  ;D

Not really something I am familiar with DJ but having recently started using XP it appears to have wizards for almost everything built in.Does it not set up the networking by itself? It may just be a case of increasing the IP on your laptop by one if it doesnt do it by itself  :-*

Thanks Sandra,

I've tried the wizards and not been able to share the connection. The error states that the IP address used by the Wirless Router 192.168.0.1 (standard network IP) needs to be alocated to the shared DUN connection and I don't know what to do!!

I'm a bit new to the wireless networking stuff!!

Well this is what i did... XP pro - 2 XP Homes.

Installed wireless hibs, ran set up network on XP Pro (the server) told it that i wanted to use this as the internet gateway using the networking wizard.
Then told it to make a network floppy (had to transfer files onto CD for laptop coz no floppy)

Ran network floppy (and CD) on other machines, told it that these machines went through a gateway on other server machine (second option) rebooted em all and bingo.

First machine was set to 192.168.0.1 others are set as they boot up and are not static, DHCP was automatically enabled so surfing is p**s easy etc.

I told my dialup on server to NOT allow a connection on demand of clients because it will connect every second if you do.

Just remember to reboot after runnning wizard on all pcs.

Thats it, simple as xover was and runnign very sweetly... oh one thing i have found is i need to connect to net on server before i boot other machines or DHCP doesnt seem to work.

**after edit**

Hmm just read your reply to sandy while i was writing this, i didnt have this problem.. sorry

OK - I sorted some of it!!

The Netgear DG824M had a web interface to change the IP address. ::) So the IP of the wireless router has now changed.

I can still share files, the internet connection wizards have run ok - but doesn't connect to internet.

Any advice?

Thanks for your help

PS - I'll reply tomorrow - off to work!!

Still can't share the dial-up connection over the wireless network - is it because it's dial-up - is it possible to share over the network?

Any advice would be a great help !

Being a bit of a dummy re networking DJ,I may be wrong but I recently set up a USB networking thing up for a friend and we couldnt get the printer to work off the second one.I since found out that it is probably because the drivers werent installed on the second one so even though it could "see" the printer it wouldnt operate it.Could it be that you havent set the DUN up on the second pc (your laptop I think from what you have said?)  :-*

Thanks

Urm - I don't know!

I've set up the wireless network fine - computers linked ok.  Set the Dial Up ISP to be able to be shared over networks - but don't know how to view them or access them from the laptop?

Not even sure if this is possible with DUN - might just wait for broadband.

Any more advice?

Thanks

Have you followed Hitch's advice above DJ?

If you have the network up and running, it's simply a question of using the Home Networking Wizard to share your DUN connection on the main PC. When you run the program on the floppy that the Wizard creates on the other PC, it changes the networking settings to allow the DUN connection to be shared over the network - all you do on the second PC is load up a browser and surf away (as long as you are connected to the Net on the other PC of course ;))

When you get BB, it'll all be handled by the router, so you will need to run the Wizard again and re-configure the settings.

Sorry!!

>> THANKS HITCH <<

Sadly when i try the wizard i get the following error message.

As Far As I Can See (running ipconfig)..
The ethernet on the PC has IP of 192.168.0.2
The Router has 192.168.0.1
The Laptop has 192.168.0.3

I can change the routers IP through its web interface setup - but what do i change it to (192.168.0.4??) also DHCP is enabled starting 192.168.0.2 ending 192.168.0.51
does this make any difference ??

Because you are not using the router as a router DJ, you can assign it any IP address you want e.g. 192.168.0.100.

This should allow the Wizard to do it's stuff ;)

Sorry the 192.168.0.1 is the LAN TCP/IP gateway address and won't be changed to 192.168.0.0

any more ideas - sory bout the hassle, I might just wait til broadband comes!

Umm... This is how it should be:-

192.168.0.1 - PC with modem (also Gateway)
192.168.0.2 - Other PC
192.168.0.100 - Router

Who mentioned 192.168.0.0 ??? ;D
