Fans of Harry Potter are in for a treat and a wait with the announcement that the final film is to be split in half.

The decision to split the seventh and final film comes after producer David Heyman claimed it was impossible to cram Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows into a single film.

To many fans it comes as a relief after several key scenes, including Quidditch matches, were excised from previous film adaptations.

Of course, producers Warner Bros will be hoping that decision to give the final film the Kill Bill treatment will generate extra revenue.

The first five movies have made $4.5bn (£2.2bn) worldwide - making it the biggest film franchise in box office history, surpassing both James Bond and Star Wars.

The first instalment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is due in autumn 2010, with part two scheduled for the following summer.

I understand Half Blood Prince will be released at the end of November this year.

Perhaps the Deathly Hallows films should be known as Horcrux I and Horcrux II?  You'd have thought the producers would have learned from Lord Voldemort what happens when you split things up .  I just hope nobody had to die in order to achieve this result.
