Thanks for the suggestion, Sandra. Unfortunately, the codec download didn't remedy the problem; however, VideoLAN came to the rescue and is now playing the files quite happily

. It is succeeding where other media players (including WinAmp) have failed.
Thank goodness for Open Source programs! They seem to have greater compatibility with Vista than many commercial programs.
