It takes quite a bit of ingenuity to think up a new world record category and a lot of effort to break into the Guinness Book of World Records.
But Mozilla has announced that it wants the world to help it set a new mark on 'Download Day', to celebrate the release of Firefox 3.
Ahead of Download Day Mozilla is asking surfers to make a pledge to download the latest version of the browser.
It also wants people to host parties to encourage friends to download Firefox 3 as well as placing Download Day buttons on their websites.
No date has yet been set for the final release of Firefox 3 although it is widely expected to become available in mid-June.
There is no current world record for downloads. Mozilla plans on providing the Guinness Book of World Records with a signed statement of authentication showing that it has followed the rules for breaking records along with a confirmation of the actual number of downloads.
So far Firefox 3 has attracted nearly 39,000 pledges from all over the world. The browser even has its own Facebook page with with 79,174 fans signed up.
Mozilla first released Firefox in 2004 and its fan base has grown steadily ever since ensuring that it has become a viable competitor to Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
According to Mozilla, there are more than 175 million users of Firefox, which is available in more than 45 languages and used in more than 230 countries.
