Whats an AMD
Ah, I thought that only happened with a certain type of AMD machine, but as mine is Intel, I think I was fairly safe.

I used Windows Updates to get it, Kaz, but as Clive said, if you have an AMD machine, you may want to hold fire on it.

It's the type of processor you have, Kaz.  Right click My Computer > Properties > General (tab) should tell you.

AMD is an alternative processor to Intel.   If you go into Control Panel/ System/System properties it will tell you which one you have.

Best to leave SP3 where it is Kaz.  It's only an accumulative update pack with a few add-ons so you already have most of it anyway.

What will happen when it comes as an automatic update what should I do then?

It does seem as though the problems are isolated still further to HP computers, and there surely can't still be hundreds of thousands of users with AMD based machines continually rebooting, but I certainly wouldn't want to be the one to advise you to download SP3, Kaz, so as Clive said, it's probably best to leave well alone.

As far as I understand it, they've blocked WU from automatically downloading it, but I could be wrong there.  I suppose, the safest option is to turn Automatic Updates off.

That seems to be the general concensus of opinion these days Kaz.  I turned mine off because of the SP3 fiasco and I don't intend switching it back on again.

I would never update up to a service pack. Not after the fiasco moving from sp1 to sp2. It's like upgrading up to a different os. There are too many problems with having one installed over another. I always just reinstall using an updated installation cd. I was able to grab a copy of xp 9in1 sp3 about 2 months ago. That's the only reason i'm running it now. Btw I'm running an amd sempron 3000. I haven't had any real problems. At least none I thought were caused by the install.

I've now plucked up the courage to download SP3 on both computers.  So far so good.   :nerves:
