XP won't start; says file is missing
« on: June 27, 2008, 05:41 »
The missing/corrupt file is:  <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll

The black screen on my mom's computer says that we need to reinstall a copy of this file.  She can't find the disc(s) that came with her computer.

I'm not a tech guy by trade (mechanic), so I don't know if I can get and install a copy of this file, or if I need to shop this one out.

What can, or should, I do?

Hi Ged and  :welcome:  This seems to be a commonly reported problem.  There is a lot of information about it HERE Please come back if that is not satisfactory.

Thanks, Clive!

I didn't realize that this problem could be that common.  I appreciate the help and will let you know how things turn out.
