Have to say, now Reno's mentioned it, I was nervous of those push down clips, but didn't have a problem installing it, and it's been OK since.  Guess I was lucky?

In a cluttered case ,fastening those clips is frustrating ,never broken anything yet but it is a stupid design.
Some of the ram clips are terribly flimsy, busted a few of those over the years.

You have to be careful with SATA connectors too!   

I actually find it easier to fit the CPU and heatsink, before installing the motherboard into the case.

So, what's stopping you?  I really don't think they would ship a high quality CPU with a crap heatsink.

Spend the extra 5 pounds on a new heatsink.

The last two dual core processors i bought came with really s**tty heatsinks. They had 4 push pens that clipped to the other side of the motherboard when pushed down hard enough. The problem with that is if you don't hear the click of the clip you aren't sure whether or not its actually gone through all the way. I was afraid of breaking the hardware pushing down on the things. Now i did make sure the temperature was stable after I finished, but still that design made me nervous as hell.

There is a major risk of chipping the processor or breaking your motherboard when pushing down too hard. I liked the old socket A heatsink clips a hell of a lot more.

Yes, it is a poor design from the view of installing it, but if you're careful, it shouldn't be a problem, and once it's fitted, it's fitted, David.  If you're going to look for another heatsink / fan, make sure it's Intel compatible, as I don't think the Athlon type will fit.

Oh yes, PC building is fun, and no matter how smoothly you think things are going, there's always a spanner just waiting to be thrown into the works!

What don't you understand sandra? I think the 4 push peg design is a poor design. I was afraid of damaging the hardware the last two times I had to deal with it. They use to use this design on the pentium IIIs back in the day. I hated them then too.  I miss the old zif like the socket A used. Just put the processor in, pull down the lever, and clip on the heatsink. With the push pin design, if you don't hear the click of the peg then you aren't sure whether its gone in all the way.

Edit: Your right about the third party heatsinks. For this socket they have to use those push peg holes to hold it down. The third party heatsinks tend to be better designed to cool a bit better and be easier to install. Better spring clips and such. The few i found weren't made out of plastic hence you would probably hear a ping or click when you stuff them through the peg hole.

The big advantage with third party heatsinks that use 120mm fans is their so quiet .
Smaller the fan the more noise they produce.
